Chapter 20 - The Unseen Crown

The sun dipped below the rugged peaks of the Green Mountains, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of violet, amber, and deep indigo. Inside the private study of Vance Manor, the room was quiet save for the gentle ticking of an antique grandfather clock.

I sat at my mahogany desk, reviewing the final financial audits of the charitable foundation. On the corner of the desk, my encrypted satellite phone lay dark and silent. For months, it had buzzed incessantly with crisis reports, syndicate updates, and assassination plots. Tonight, it remained dormant—a testament to the absolute peace enforced by the Ghost King across three continents.

Claire walked into the study, carrying a steaming mug of chamomile tea, setting it gently beside my blotter before leaning over to kiss my cheek.

"Working late, Mr. Vance?" she teased softly, her eyes twinkling with affection.

"Never too late for you, my love," I replied, closing the ledger and pulling her onto my lap.

Suddenly, the secure satellite phone on the desk gave a single, soft, low chime—a frequency reserved exclusively for high-priority dispatches from the supreme council in Zurich. The screen illuminated with a brief, encrypted cipher text: *"All sectors secure. The throne awaits your word, Sire."*

I looked down at the glowing screen for a brief second, then pressed the power button, plunging the device into total darkness. I tossed it carelessly back into the top drawer of the desk and slid the brass lock shut with a satisfying click.

Claire rested her head against my shoulder, unaware of the encrypted message, completely content in the safety of my arms. I wrapped my arms around her waist, looking out the large bay window toward the starlit night sky, knowing that while empires rise and fall in the shadows of the world, true power was knowing when to let the crown rest in the dark.
