Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Crown

St. Jude’s private wing was dead silent at 2:45 a.m., save for the rhythmic hum of IV drips and the gentle beep of cardiac monitors. Claire rested beneath warmed thermal blankets, her breathing stabilizing under Dr. Mercer’s careful watch. I sat in a high-backed leather chair beside her bed, my fingers resting lightly on the silver signet ring embossed with an intertwined crown and dagger—the emblem of the Crown syndicate.
My secure satellite phone vibrated against my knee. It was Marcus, my chief director of operations in Zurich, patched through via an encrypted military-grade relay.
"Ghost King," Marcus’s gravelly voice filled the encrypted earpiece. "We have intercepted the electronic transmission logs from Vivian’s corporate holding entity, Sterling Capital. She initiated three wire transfers totaling twelve million dollars to offshore shell accounts in the Cayman Islands less than an hour ago, attempting to preemptively siphon Claire’s inheritance before the court date."
"Freeze every single account," I instructed, my voice flat, cold, and absolute. "Not a single cent leaves Vermont. Furthermore, initiate a forensic audit on every municipal official, judge, and notary public in this county who has dined at Vivian’s table in the past three years. I want their financial skeletons exposed by morning."
"Done," Marcus replied. "And the police detachment in Blackthorn’s district? Chief Miller has been on Vivian’s payroll for a decade. Shall we remove him?"
"Let him play his hand," I replied, staring at Claire’s pale face in the dim light. "When they try to cover up last night’s assault, Miller will incriminate himself permanently. Give them enough rope to hang themselves with golden cord."
Back at Blackthorn House, Vivian was pouring herself a cup of imported Blue Mountain coffee in her sunlit conservatory, basking in the glow of anticipated victory. She believed Claire was broken, humiliated, and terrified into submission. She believed that by morning, the estate would be hers, and her younger daughter, Paige, would be secured as the sole heiress of a multi-million-dollar empire.
Paige walked into the conservatory, wrapping a silk robe tighter around her shoulders, her expression nervous. "Mom, did you hear anything from the gates? It was freezing out there last night. What if Claire actually froze?"
May you like
Vivian scoffed, taking a slow sip of her coffee. "Claire is weak, Paige. Weakness deserves to freeze. She will sign the papers today, or she will find herself facing criminal charges for trespassing and elder abuse. That husband of hers—what’s his name, Elias?—is a pathetic parasite who couldn't defend a stray dog, let alone his wife."
Neither of them knew that within hours, the foundation upon which their entire world rested was going to turn to dust.
