Chapter 5 - The Glass House of Lies

The grand ballroom of Blackthorn House was adorned with crystal chandeliers and roaring stone fireplaces, hosting Vivian’s annual winter charity brunch. Local dignitaries, judges, and wealthy socialites mingled over champagne and caviar, entirely unaware of the storm brewing beneath the surface of elite Vermont society.
Vivian stood near the mahogany staircase, dressed in an exquisite burgundy velvet dress, her pearls catching the chandelier light as she accepted compliments from the district prosecutor. She wore the serene, untouchable smile of a woman who believed she had successfully buried her problems beneath two feet of fresh snow.
"Vivian, darling, where is Claire?" inquired Senator Vance’s wife, adjusting her diamond brooch. "We missed her at the committee meeting yesterday."
Vivian’s smile tightened for a fraction of a second before smoothing back into polite elegance. "Oh, Claire is currently indisposed with a mild case of exhaustion, dear. Family matters, you understand. Younger daughters can be so terribly dramatic when inheritance laws don't bend to their whims."
Before the senator’s wife could reply, the massive double oak doors of the grand foyer swung open with a resounding crash that silenced every conversation in the room.
Heavy boots crunched against the marble floor. But it was not Chief Miller or local deputies who entered. Four men in immaculate dark suits, carrying the unmistakable bearing of elite international security operatives, marched in formation, clearing the center aisle. Behind them walked me—Elias. My black wool coat unbuttoned, my silver signet ring gleaming under the crystal lights, my expression a mask of absolute, glacial composure.

Gasps echoed through the ballroom. Socialites recoiled in horror and confusion. Vivian froze mid-sentence, her wine glass trembling in her manicured hand as she stared at the man she had mocked just hours earlier as a bookkeeping nobody.
"Elias?" Vivian shrieked, her voice cracking across the silent hall. "What is the meaning of this? Guards! Chief Miller! Remove this trespasser immediately!"
