Chapter 15 - The Truth About Claire's Father

Back at Blackthorn House, Claire was sorting through her late father’s private study in the east wing, opening long-forgotten mahogany drawers filled with old letters, photographs, and business journals. Among them, she found a sealed envelope bearing her father’s handwritten seal, addressed simply to: *To My Daughter Claire, and Her Husband Elias.*

She brought the envelope down to the drawing room where I was reading a leather-bound volume of poetry by the fireplace. Sitting beside me, she broke the wax seal and unfolded the heavy parchment paper, beginning to read aloud in a soft, trembling voice.

*\"My dearest Claire, if you are reading this, it means Vivian’s greed finally forced your hand, and Elias has revealed his true nature to protect you. From the day Elias walked into our lives and asked for your hand in marriage, I knew he was no ordinary man. I recognized the quiet discipline in his eyes—the same discipline I saw in my own youth among men who shape nations from the shadows. I entrusted you to him not because he was wealthy, but because I knew he was the only man on earth strong enough to shield you from the monsters in our family. Trust him, my child. He is the anchor in a storm you cannot even begin to imagine.\"*

Claire’s voice broke on the final sentence, and a single tear slipped down her cheek. She folded the letter and pressed it to her heart, looking at me with profound, unshakable devotion.

"You knew my father knew," she whispered.

"I did," I said, wiping the tear from her cheek with my thumb. "He was a wise man, Claire. He knew that true power never needs to shout."
