Chapter 4 - Echoes in the Snow

Morning sunlight filtered through the hospital blinds, casting geometric shadows across the pristine white sheets. Dr. Mercer walked in carrying a thick manila folder containing the medical examination results and the forensic audio recordings recovered from Claire’s coat.

"Here are the official diagnostics, Mr. Vance," Dr. Mercer said quietly, placing the folder on the bedside table. "Stage one hypothermia, fractured left rib, severe contusions on both wrists indicative of forcible restraint, and a laceration inside the lower lip. The audio file from her coat pocket is pristine. Your mother-in-law's voice is unmistakably clear, instructing her daughter to leave Claire in the snow until she agreed to sign the documents."

Claire clutched the edge of the blanket, tears welling in her eyes. "I never thought my own mother could be so cruel. All because Daddy left the estate to me in his final, unamended will. She thinks money is the only measure of human worth."

"Greed makes monsters out of ordinary people," I replied, brushing a stray lock of dark hair from her forehead. "Your father knew exactly what he was doing when he entrusted the estate to you. He saw through Vivian's facade years ago."

"What happens now, Elias?" Claire asked, looking up at me with searching eyes. For three years, she had believed me to be a quiet, introverted financial auditor who spent his evenings reviewing spreadsheets. She had no idea of the vast, unseen machinery I commanded across international capitals.

"Now, we let them make their next move," I said, my voice steady. "Vivian believes she holds all the cards. She has Chief Miller, she has forged legal drafts, and she has her social standing. By noon, she will try to storm this hospital with local deputies to drag you back. And that is precisely what we want."

At that exact moment, my secure terminal beeped softly. A satellite feed displayed live footage of Blackthorn House. Two local police cruisers bearing Chief Miller’s insignia were pulling up the snowy drive, disgorging four armed officers led by Miller himself, looking grim and determined to enforce whatever illegal orders Vivian had paid him to execute.

I stood up, buttoned my black suit jacket, and looked at Dr. Mercer. "Keep her secure. Do not let anyone enter this room without my direct biometric authorization. I have a reception to attend."

Claire caught my wrist, her grip surprisingly strong. "Be careful, Elias. They are ruthless."

"They are playing chess against a hurricane, Claire," I said with a faint, reassuring smile. "Rest."
