Chapter 3 - The Midnight Summoning

The digital clock on the hospital wall blinked 4:30 a.m. when my phone rang again. This time it was a direct cellular call from an unknown local Vermont number. I tapped the screen and brought it to my ear without speaking.

"Elias?" Vivian’s voice rasped through the speaker, dripping with condescension and arrogant authority. "Bring my daughter home immediately. This family dispute has gone on long enough, and I will not have our name dragged through local gossip because of your wife’s hysterical tantrums."

"Claire is resting under medical supervision, Vivian," I replied evenly.

"Don't play games with me, you pathetic little bookkeeper," Vivian snapped, her patience wearing thin. "You audit invoices in a spare bedroom while my family controls half of this county. If Claire isn't back at Blackthorn House by noon with signed transfer papers, I will ensure your little life is dismantled piece by piece. Chief Miller is already preparing a warrant for your arrest for domestic disturbance."

I let out a quiet, chilling chuckle—a sound that made the air in the hospital room seem to drop several degrees. "A warrant, Vivian? That is ambitious. Tell me, does Chief Miller know about the offshore accounts in the Bahamas registered under his cousin's name? Or should I forward those files directly to the federal prosecutor before breakfast?"

Silence hung on the line for three agonizing seconds. Vivian’s breath hitched. "What... what are you talking about?"

"You should have checked who actually audited the freight lines your late husband used for his shipping empire thirty years ago," I said softly. "Every ledger, every bribe, every dirty transaction—they all passed across my desk long before you married into the family. You thought you were the predator, Vivian. You were merely swimming in an aquarium I constructed."

"You're bluffing," she hissed, though her voice lacked its previous conviction. "You're nothing! A nobody!"

"Stay at Blackthorn House, Vivian," I whispered, cutting the connection before she could reply. "Do not pack a bag. Your guests will be arriving shortly."

I slipped the phone back into my pocket and turned back to Claire, who was stirring beneath the blankets. Her eyelids fluttered open, dark lashes casting shadows against her pale cheeks. She looked up at me with a mixture of fear and profound relief.

"Elias..." she whispered, her voice raspy. "Did you talk to them?"

"I did," I said, taking her cold hand in mine and warming it between my palms. "And the reckoning has begun, Claire. No one will ever hurt you again."
