Chapter 13 - The Poison Pill

Gabriel gasped, stepping back from the glowing terminal. "Grant set a final trap... even from beyond the grave."
"No," Evelyn said softly, studying the digital code on the screen. "It wasn't a trap for us. It was Grant's ultimate defense mechanism against Victoria Sterling and her uncle Arthur. Grant knew if Victoria tried to steal the key, she would attempt to open the vault herself, destroying the evidence against the Sterling family."
Evelyn stepped directly in front of the biometric microphone.
"Evelyn," Gabriel said nervously. "Are you sure?"
Evelyn looked at the glowing red sensor. She remembered the nine years she spent listening to Grant’s voice, studying his cadence, understanding his dark, manipulative mind.
She leaned into the microphone and spoke clearly: "Evelyn Vance. Formerly Evelyn Alden. Override protocol: Alpha Nine."
The red sensor flashed violently for three agonizing seconds. The heavy silence in the subterranean vault felt suffocating.
Then... CLICK.
The digital screen turned bright emerald green. Authentication Confirmed. Primary Trustee Recognized.
With a deep, pneumatic hiss, the massive titanium door swung open slowly, revealing a small, lit private room inside.
In the center of the room, resting on a velvet pedestal, was a heavy black leather briefcase and a thick physical dossier bound in gold cord.
Gabriel rushed into the room, his hands trembling as he opened the gold-bound dossier. He flipped through the yellowed pages—original bank ledgers, signed confessions from former corrupt officials, and internal corporate records proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Gabriel's late father, Marcus Thorne, had been entirely innocent of all fraud charges.
Tears welled in Gabriel's eyes as he clutched the papers to his chest. "He was innocent... my father was an honest man."

Evelyn walked over and put her arms around Gabriel, pulling him into a deep, emotional embrace. "Now the whole world will know the truth, Gabriel."
At that exact moment, the heavy outer doors of the bank lobby above rattled as Victoria Sterling and her team of Swiss attorneys burst into the building, dripping with snow and demanding immediate access to Vault 408.
