Chapter 16 - The Proposal

Evelyn's breath hitched as Gabriel slowly turned her around to face him on the moonlit balcony.

He opened the velvet box, revealing an exquisitely designed ring made of polished platinum, set with a rare, shimmering sapphire surrounded by delicate, sustainably sourced diamonds. It was modern, elegant, and entirely unique—designed by Gabriel himself.

"Evelyn," Gabriel said, his hazel eyes shining with deep sincerity and love. "You spent nine years locked in a marriage built on performance, vanity, and lies. I promise you a lifetime built on honesty, partnership, and unconditional love. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"

Evelyn looked down at the ring, then up into Gabriel's warm, steadfast face. There was no hesitation in her heart. No fear. No lingering shadows of her past.

"Yes," Evelyn whispered softly, a joyful tear slipping down her cheek. "Yes, Gabriel. Absolutely yes."

He slid the ring onto her finger, lifting her into his arms and kissing her with a passion and tenderness that made her soul sing.

The news of Evelyn Vance’s engagement to Gabriel Thorne swept through New York society, but this time, the media narrative was vastly different. She was no longer framed as "the betrayed political wife." She was celebrated as a brilliant philanthropist, a formidable justice advocate, and a powerhouse in her own right.

Three months later, construction on the Queens Legal Center was completed.

The opening ceremony was a triumphant success. Hundreds of women and families attended the ribbon-cutting event. The building was a masterpiece of modern architecture—flooded with natural sunlight, featuring open courtyards, secure residential suites, and state-of-the-art legal offices.

As Evelyn toured the completed facility, a young woman stepped out from the main waiting room, looking nervous and holding a small child's hand.

Evelyn stopped. She recognized her instantly.

It was Camila—the young blonde woman with the distinctive tattoos who had been in Grant Alden’s bedroom on that fateful Thursday night two years ago.
