Chapter 20 - A Life of Light

One year later.

Evelyn sat on the wide stone porch of a beautiful timber and glass home designed by Gabriel, situated on a quiet, private bluff overlooking the Hudson River.

It was a serene Sunday morning. The autumn leaves burned in brilliant hues of red, gold, and orange. The air was fresh, cool, and filled with the gentle rustle of the forest trees.

In the yard below, Gabriel was playing with their four-month-old son, Marcus, lifting the laughing baby high into the air against the morning sunlight. Harold Finch was sitting on a nearby bench, sipping black coffee and smiling rare, contented smile as he watched the baby. Martin Greer sat at the wooden porch table, happily reading the Sunday newspaper and enjoying a fresh croissant.

Evelyn held a warm cup of herbal tea in her hands, watching her family with a heart overflowing with contentment and pure happiness.

Her phone buzzed quietly on the wooden table. It was a push notification from a news outlet:

Former Senator Victor Croft and Julian Vance denied parole for second time. Arthur Sterling’s hedge fund dissolved following regulatory enforcement.

Evelyn looked at the headline for two seconds, felt absolutely nothing, and casually swiped the notification away forever. Those ghosts no longer had any space in her world.

Gabriel walked up the porch steps, carrying tiny baby Marcus wrapped in a soft wool blanket. He sat down beside Evelyn on the wooden bench, placing his arm around her shoulders and kissing her temple gently.

"What are you thinking about, my beautiful wife?" Gabriel asked softly.

Evelyn looked at her handsome husband, her healthy, laughing baby boy, and the true friends who had stood by her side through the darkest storms. She remembered the lie that had begun on a Thursday morning years ago in Westchester—the suitcase, the fake smile, the dark red robe, and the heartbreak.

That terrible Thursday had felt like the end of her life. But in reality, it had been the painful, necessary breaking of a cage.

She leaned into Gabriel's chest, taking a deep, satisfying breath of the crisp river air, feeling completely safe, infinitely loved, and entirely free.

"I'm thinking," Evelyn said, smiling brightly as she reached up to touch her baby’s soft cheek, "that this is the very best chapter of all."
