Chapter 9 - The Ghost from the Past

For the next eight months, Evelyn and Gabriel Thorne worked side by side. They spent late evenings reviewing architectural blueprints, visiting construction sites in Queens, and discussing philosophy over quiet dinners in small, hidden Italian bistros. Gabriel was everything Grant had never been: humble, brilliant, deeply empathetic, and entirely honest. He listened to Evelyn when she spoke, respected her intelligence, and never once tried to shrink her presence to enlarge his own.
A deep, undeniable romance blossomed between them—slowly, naturally, built on a solid foundation of mutual trust and respect.
However, just as the Queens Legal Center was nearing its final phase of construction, a dark ghost from Evelyn’s past suddenly resurfaced.
It was a cold November afternoon. Evelyn was working alone in her Brooklyn brownstone office when her personal phone rang. The caller ID displayed an unknown, encrypted number from an upstate correctional facility.
Evelyn answered cautiously. "Hello?"
"Evelyn..."
The voice on the other end was raspy, hollow, and filled with bitter defeat. It was Grant.
Evelyn felt a brief flare of annoyance, but her voice remained completely flat. "Grant. You're not supposed to be calling this number. My attorney handle all communications."
"Please, don't hang up," Grant begged, his voice cracking. "I'm calling from the prison infirmary. I... I don't have much time, Evelyn."
Evelyn frowned, suspicious. "What are you talking about?"
"I was diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer three weeks ago," Grant whispered, coughing weakly into the receiver. "The doctors say I have maybe two months left. The federal prosecutors agreed to grant me compassionate release so I can spend my final weeks in a hospice facility."
Evelyn closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. Hearing her former abuser sound so fragile stirred no satisfaction in her—only a somber realization of how completely his vanity had destroyed him.
"I'm sorry to hear about your illness, Grant," she said honestly. "But we have nothing left to say to each other."
"Wait!" Grant pleaded. "There's something you need to know. Before I was arrested, Senator Croft gave me access to an offshore vault in Zurich. Inside that vault is a physical dossier—documents Croft collected on every major political figure in New York, including Gabriel Thorne."
Evelyn froze, her hand tightening around the phone. "What does Gabriel have to do with Croft?"
"Gabriel's late father was Croft's business partner twenty years ago," Grant revealed, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Croft framed Gabriel's father for a massive bank fraud that drove the old man to suicide. But the dossier proves Gabriel's father was innocent! Gabriel has been searching for those documents his entire adult life to clear his family name."
Evelyn's heart pounded in her chest. She knew how deeply Gabriel mourned his father, and how the shadow of his father's ruined reputation had haunted Gabriel's entire career.
"Why are you telling me this, Grant?" Evelyn asked sharply. "What's your price?"

"I don't want money," Grant wept quietly. "I'm dying, Evelyn. I just... I want you to visit me once before I die. I want to look you in the eyes and tell you how sorry I am. Bring Gabriel. I will give you the vault key and the authorization code."
Evelyn sat in silence for a long moment, weighing his words. Was this another one of Grant's sociopathic traps? Or was it the final, desperate act of a broken man seeking redemption before meeting his end?
