Chapter 10 - The Secret Offshore Account With Emily’s Initials

The municipal airstrip was shrouded in a dense, coastal fog as Detective Miller’s cruiser raced past the security gates, tires screeching against the wet asphalt. In the distance, a sleek twin-engine private jet sat idling on the tarmac, its turbine engines whining at high pitch, ready for immediate takeoff.

Through the heavy rain, we saw Derek sprinting across the tarmac, carrying a heavy leather duffel bag, desperately trying to reach the boarding ladder before airport security intercepted him.

“Stop right there, Derek Holt!” Detective Miller shouted into the wind, drawing his weapon as he vaulted out of the cruiser.

Derek froze, turning around with a look of sheer, unadulterated panic. He dropped the duffel bag, raising his hands as the heavy wind whipped his tailored suit jacket around him.

“You’re too late!” Derek screamed over the roar of the jet engines, a manic grin crossing his face. “The transfer went through! The offshore accounts are secured under my name—and Emily’s initials! You can’t touch a dime of it!”

I stepped out of the car, walking slowly toward him through the puddles, my expression completely unreadable. “You really are a fool, Derek. You thought setting up an offshore account with Emily’s initials would protect you?”

Derek sneered, backing toward the plane’s open door. “It means she’s a co-conspirator! If those accounts are seized, her name goes down in the federal indictment right beside mine! We sink together!”

“Not quite,” a calm, steady voice echoed behind us.

Attorney Harrison Vance Jr. stepped out from the shadow of the hangar, flanked by two federal banking investigators. In his hands, he held a thick sheaf of legal papers stamped with federal seals.

“What… what are you doing here, Harrison?” Derek stammered, his manic grin instantly evaporating. “You’re my lawyer!”

“I was your lawyer, Derek,” Vance corrected coldly, adjusting his glasses. “Until I realized you listed my firm as the primary liability buffer for your unauthorized offshore transactions. That account you just transferred millions into? It’s not protected by foreign sovereignty. It’s a direct feeder account linked to federal seizure protocols under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.”

Derek staggered backward against the metal boarding ladder, his face turning completely ashen. “No... that’s impossible. My mother said—!”

“Your mother spent her entire life building a house of cards, Derek, and you just set the match to it,” I said, stopping a few feet away from him.

Detective Miller holstered his weapon, stepping forward to snap the cold steel handcuffs around Derek’s wrists for the second time in a week—only this time, there was no bail, no high-priced defense attorney to save him, and no escape.

As Derek was pushed into the back of the cruiser, his head hung low in total defeat, Emily walked up beside me, watching the red taillights of the police car fade into the foggy night.

“It’s really over, isn't it?” she whispered, letting out a breath she felt like she’d been holding for years.

“It’s not just over, sweetheart,” I said, putting my arm around her shoulders. “It’s a brand-new beginning.”

Little did we know, back at the Holt family mansion, Marlene was packing her own bags—and discovering a final, terrifying secret hidden inside Derek’s office safe that would change everything.
