Chapter 3 - The Police Station Confrontation and a Mask That Slipped

The morning sun cast a sharp, cold light across downtown. Emily and I walked into the precinct station at 8:00 AM sharp, accompanied by Detective Miller—no relation to me, but a sharp investigator with a reputation for dismantling white-collar thugs.

Ten minutes later, the heavy glass doors swung open, and Derek walked in flanked by high-priced defense attorney Harrison Vance—no relation to the officer, but a notorious bulldog known for intimidating witnesses.

Derek took one look at Emily standing beside me, and his arrogant smirk returned instantly. He strutted across the room like he owned the precinct.

“Emily, honey,” Derek said, pitching his voice into a smooth, wounded cadence designed for the benefit of the desk sergeants. “What is the meaning of this childishness? You ran off with your father over a heated argument at dinner? The firm is hosting a gala tonight, and you’re pulling this stunt?”

Emily flinched, stepping back, but I stepped forward, blocking his path. “Shut your mouth, Derek. Your performance for the audience is over.”

Attorney Harrison Vance stepped up, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. “Mr. Miller, I presume? I’m counsel for Mr. Holt. I advise you to cease and desist this harassment immediately. If my client is not released from this absurd misunderstanding within five minutes, we will file countersuits for alienation of affection and defamation.”

Detective Miller walked out of his office holding a thick manila folder, his expression like granite. “Mr. Holt, Mr. Vance, step into Interview Room B. Now.”

Inside the small, sterile room, Detective Miller dropped the folder onto the metal table with a sharp thud. “Mr. Holt, you are being formally charged with domestic assault in the third degree, based on eyewitness statements, restaurant camera footage, and medical documentation of injuries sustained by Mrs. Holt.”

Derek laughed, a short, nervous sound. “This is ridiculous! My wife tripped over her own heels at the restaurant. Her father is a bitter retired bureaucrat who hates me.”

“And what about the forged deed transfer on the condo property at Elm Street?” Detective Miller asked smoothly, sliding a document across the table. “Dated four months ago, bearing a signature that handwriting experts have already verified as fraudulent.”

Derek’s face drained of color in a single heartbeat. The arrogant smirk vanished, replaced by a twitching jaw muscle. He looked from Detective Miller to me, his eyes widening in sudden, panicked realization.

“That… that’s private business,” Derek stammered, his polished corporate veneer cracking wide open. “That’s a civil matter between spouses!”

“Property fraud involving falsified notary seals crosses well into criminal territory, Mr. Holt,” Detective Miller replied, clicking handcuffs onto the table. “Stand up and place your hands behind your back.”

As the cold steel clicked around Derek’s wrists, he glared at Emily with pure, venomous hatred. “You bitch,” he hissed. “You think you’re going to win? My mother will tear you and your precious father apart piece by piece!”

Emily didn't flinch. She looked him straight in the eye, her voice steady and clear. “The silence is over, Derek. Welcome to reality.”
