Chapter 20 - A New Horizon With an Unresolved Echo

Six months later, the city had largely moved on from the corporate scandal that once dominated its headlines. St. Jude Memorial Hospital had been restructured under new, independent medical leadership, and the community foundation had been fully restored to fund pediatric trauma care.
Emily’s condo—now securely registered under her name and protected by an ironclad family trust—had been redecorated. The minimalist, sterile furniture chosen by Derek had been replaced with warm colors, comfortable seating, and the cherished family heirlooms left behind by her late mother.
On a bright Saturday morning, Emily stood on her private balcony overlooking the city skyline, holding a steaming mug of coffee as the warm sunlight washed across her face.
I sat at the kitchen island inside, reviewing final paperwork for the new charitable foundation we had established in her mother’s honor to support survivors of domestic abuse and financial fraud.
My phone chimed on the granite countertop. An unknown text message flashed across the screen from a restricted federal facility number.
I opened it. It was a single, handwritten note scanned from prison stationery, signed with initials *D.H.*
*“I hope you found what you were looking for,”* the message read. *“Nothing out here is as warm as the home we lost.”*
I stared at the screen for a moment, feeling neither anger nor pity—only the distant echo of a chapter finally closed. I didn't reply. I simply deleted the message, locked the phone, and walked out onto the balcony to join my daughter.
Emily looked at me, smiling brightly as the morning breeze caught her hair. She handed me a fresh cup of coffee, her hand steady, her eyes bright with unwritten tomorrows.

“Ready for the weekend, Dad?” she asked.
“Always, sweetheart,” I smiled, looking out toward the horizon where the sun was shining brighter than ever. “Always.”
