Chapter 9 - Surveillance Footage That Changes the Entire Game

The hospital corridors smelled of sharp antiseptic and impending disaster. When Emily and I rushed through the automated double doors of the intensive care unit, Detective Miller was already waiting by the nurses' station alongside two federal marshals.
“How is he?” Emily asked, her professional nursing instincts kicking in despite her personal history with the family.
“Stable, but unconscious,” Detective Miller said quietly, handing us visitors' badges. “Dr. Vance Sr. suffered a hypertensive crisis right after the board voted unanimously to strip him of his medical license and freeze the foundation accounts.”
“Did he say anything before he lost consciousness?” I asked.
“Just one thing,” Detective Miller replied, his expression grave. He pointed toward a secondary security monitor on the wall. “He told the floor nurse to give you the original restaurant security footage from the night Derek assaulted Emily—uncut, unedited, and directly from the restaurant’s private mainframe.”
Emily froze. “The restaurant manager told us the footage was automatically archived, but Derek claimed he had it scrubbed.”
“Derek’s influence didn't reach as deep as he thought,” Detective Miller said, inserting a master thumb drive into the console. “Hit play.”
The screen flickered to life, displaying the crystal-clear interior of the upscale restaurant. The time stamp matched the exact second the confrontation began. But as the video played past the initial angle we had seen, a terrifying new detail emerged.
On screen, Derek didn't just grab Emily’s hair and force her head down to the table. Just before doing so, Marlene had leaned across the table, whispering something directly into Derek’s ear while slipping a small, amber pill bottle into his hand. Derek had ingested the contents—a heavy prescription sedative combined with alcohol—explaining the erratic, violent rage that flashed across his face moments later.
Emily watched the screen in absolute horror, tears streaming silently down her cheeks. “She... she drugged him? His own mother coached him into a violent episode just to provoke a reaction on camera?”
“Not to provoke a reaction, Emily,” I said, my voice cold as ice as the pieces of the puzzle clicked together in my mind. “To manufacture evidence of your instability. They needed a public spectacle where you looked hysterical and Derek looked like the victimized husband trying to restrain his erratic wife. It was all a set-up from the very beginning.”
Detective Miller stared at the screen, shaking his head in disbelief. “That’s not just domestic assault anymore. That’s calculated, premeditated endangerment and fraud at an industrial scale. We now have enough evidence to charge both Derek and Marlene with criminal conspiracy.”
Just then, my phone buzzed with an urgent text message from my private investigator contact downtown: *Derek Holt just emptied his secondary personal account and booked a private charter flight out of the municipal airstrip. Destination: Unknown.*

“He’s running,” I said, looking at Detective Miller.
“Not if we beat him to the tarmac,” Detective Miller replied, drawing his service radio. “All units, lockdown the private aviation terminal. Code red.”
