Chapter 15 - A Courtroom Battle Where Past Secrets Become Weapons

The federal district courtroom was packed to capacity on Monday morning. Media crews crowded the courthouse steps, camera lenses flashing every time a defense attorney or federal prosecutor walked through the security gates.
Inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Judge Henderson, a no-nonsense jurist with a reputation for dealing harshly with white-collar criminals, sat behind the mahogany bench with an expression like granite.
At the defense table sat Derek Holt, wearing an orange jumpsuit instead of his usual tailored Italian suit, his hair unstyled, his arrogant swagger entirely replaced by a hollow, defeated stare. Beside him sat Jonathan Thorne, who glared coldly at the prosecution team.
The federal prosecutor rose, adjusting his notes before addressing the bench. “Your Honor, the United States presents Exhibit A through F—comprehensive financial audits, bank records, and sworn affidavits detailing a multi-million-dollar fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy syndicate operated by the defendants.”
Attorney Harrison Vance Jr., testifying as a cooperating witness for the prosecution, took the stand. Under direct examination, Vance detailed every fraudulent transaction, every forged document, and every illegal offshore wire transfer orchestrated by Derek and Thorne over the past five years.
When it was time for cross-examination, Derek’s defense attorney stood up, desperate to salvage their case. “Mr. Vance, isn't it true that you personally signed several of these corporate filings without Mr. Holt’s explicit knowledge?”
Vance looked directly across the courtroom at Derek, his voice steady. “No. Mr. Holt directed every transaction, approved every shell company, and personally benefited from the embezzled funds.”
Derek slammed his fist onto the defense table in sudden rage. “That’s a lie! You’re framing me, you coward!”
“Order in the court!” Judge Henderson struck his gavel sharply, the loud crack echoing through the silent courtroom. “Another outburst like that, Mr. Holt, and you will be removed for contempt.”

Derek sank back into his chair, his chest heaving, his face red with humiliation. He looked across the gallery and caught Emily’s eye. Emily sat in the front row beside me, her posture completely calm, her gaze unyielding.
For the first time in their marriage, Derek realized there was no escape, no manipulation left that could save him.
