Chapter 11 - A Confrontation at the Hospital Where Lives Hang in the Balance

The morning news cycle was dominated by the collapse of the Holt-Thorne corporate empire. Financial channels ran continuous ticker tape updates detailing the federal indictment of Derek Holt, the freezing of Marlene’s estate assets, and the sweeping investigation into St. Jude Memorial Hospital’s endowment funds.
Emily returned to work at the hospital for her first shift since the scandal broke. Stepping through the emergency department doors felt different this time—the air was no longer tainted by the invisible shadow of Dr. Vance Sr. or the quiet intimidation of her estranged husband’s family name. Her colleagues greeted her with warm smiles, supportive nods, and quiet words of solidarity.
Around noon, however, the fragile peace of the trauma ward was shattered by an emergency code announcement echoing through the public address system: *Code Blue, Room 402, Intensive Care.*
Room 402 was occupied by Dr. Harrison Vance Sr., who had remained unconscious following his massive hypertensive stroke earlier in the week.
Emily rushed toward the ICU, donning sterile gloves and a protective gown just as the cardiac arrest team began chest compressions on the elderly physician. The attending physician was struggling to establish an emergency IV line as monitors beeped in a chaotic, frantic rhythm.
“His pressure is bottoming out! We’re losing him!” the resident shouted over the alarms.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Emily stepped up to the bedside, her hands steady, her eyes locked on the cardiac monitor. “Move aside, give me the pediatric line. His veins are collapsed from the stroke medication; we need a central line placement immediately.”
With the precise, practiced calm of a veteran trauma nurse, Emily guided the catheter into place within seconds, securing the line and administering the necessary resuscitation drugs just as the heart monitor stabilized into a steady, rhythmic beep.
The room exhaled a collective sigh of relief. As the crash cart was wheeled back out, a weak, raspy voice came from the hospital bed.
Dr. Vance Sr. slowly opened his eyes, staring up at the ceiling before his gaze drifted over to Emily standing by his side in her blue scrubs.
“Emily…” the old man whispered, his voice trembling and dry. “You… you saved me.”
“I’m a nurse, Dr. Vance,” Emily replied quietly, her voice entirely devoid of malice or triumph. “It’s my job to keep people alive, regardless of who they are.”
The old physician closed his eyes, tears leaking from the corners of his eyelids as the immense weight of his family’s sins finally caught up with him. “My son… Derek… is he…?”

“He’s in federal custody, Doctor,” Emily said softly. “And the house of cards you both built has completely collapsed.”
Dr. Vance turned his head away toward the window, whispering words that were swallowed by the hum of the ventilator.
