Chapter 16 - The Unexpected Ally Who Turns the Tide

As the morning session adjourned for lunch, an unexpected visitor approached us in the corridor outside the courtroom. It was Patricia Vance, the estranged sister of Dr. Vance Sr. and a former federal banking regulator who had retired quietly years ago.

She looked at Emily with warm, compassionate eyes before turning her gaze toward me.

“Mr. Miller,” Patricia said quietly, holding a weathered leather portfolio. “I’ve been watching this trial unfold from afar. What Derek and my brother did to your family is an absolute disgrace to our name.”

“Thank you, Patricia,” I replied cautiously. “What brings you to the courthouse today?”

She opened the portfolio and handed me a certified legal document bearing federal seals from twenty years ago. “When Jonathan Thorne first established the Holt family trust, my brother and Thorne manipulated our aging father into signing away shares of the family estate under false pretenses. I’ve spent two decades trying to find proof of that initial fraud.”

I scanned the document, my eyes widening as the legal implications became crystal clear. “This proves that the founding capital of the Holt-Thorne enterprise was built on stolen inheritance.”

“Exactly,” Patricia said firmly. “And it means that every asset Derek and Marlene claimed as generational wealth legally belongs to the original family trust—which, under the updated provisions, names Emily as a primary beneficiary through her late mother’s maternal lineage.”

Emily stared at the paper in astonishment. “My mother’s family… they were the original owners of the estate?”

“Yes, my dear,” Patricia smiled softly, placing a hand on Emily’s arm. “It’s time justice came full circle.”

With this final, devastating piece of evidence in hand, afternoon proceedings took a dramatic turn. When the court reconvened, the prosecution introduced Patricia’s affidavit into the permanent record, effectively dismantling any remaining legal defense the Holt family had regarding their generational assets.

Jonathan Thorne’s defense team immediately requested an emergency recess to confer with their client, realizing their case had completely dissolved.
