Chapter 8 - The Betrayal of a Trusted Family Attorney

The fallout from the safe deposit box ledger was swift and devastating. Within forty-eight hours of handing the encrypted flash drives over to the District Attorney’s office, federal agents executed simultaneous search warrants at Derek’s corporate office and the private residence of senior partner Jonathan Thorne.
The corporate facade was crumbling. Headlines on financial news blogs blared: *Elite Corporate Partner Implicated in Massive Financial Fraud and Hospital Endowment Embezzlement.*
Yet, amidst the chaos, a new player stepped out of the shadows—Harrison Vance Jr., the family attorney who had spent years acting as the Holt family’s legal shield, suddenly requested an off-the-record meeting with me at a quiet coffee shop across from the courthouse.
I arrived alone, though Detective Miller waited discreetly in an unmarked sedan parked across the street. Vance sat in a corner booth, nervously stirring a black coffee, looking ten years older than he had during our police station confrontation.
“Mr. Miller,” Vance began without preamble, not even looking up as I slid into the booth opposite him. “You’ve backed Derek into a corner from which he cannot escape. But you need to understand something—Derek is just the lieutenant. The captain of this ship is Jonathan Thorne.”
“Thorne is already facing federal indictment,” I replied calmly, resting my arms on the table. “What makes you think I care about his position in the firm?”
Vance sighed heavily, finally looking up with dark circles under his eyes. “Because Thorne isn't going down alone. He has a contingency file containing compromised records of every judge, prosecutor, and city official who accepted campaign donations from the Holt-Thorne foundation. If he gets indicted, he’s going to burn the entire judicial system down with him.”
“Are you here to negotiate a plea deal for Derek, or are you here to threaten me?” I asked, narrowing my eyes.
“I’m here to save my own skin,” Vance said bluntly. He slid a thin manila folder across the table. “This is a signed affidavit detailing how Derek forged your daughter’s signature on the condo transfer, under direct orders from Jonathan Thorne. In exchange for immunity from conspiracy charges, I’m giving you the legal weapon to sever Derek’s financial ties permanently.”
I opened the folder, scanning the legal signatures and corporate seals. It was the missing link—the definitive proof that Derek hadn't acted alone, but as part of a coordinated criminal enterprise designed to entrap Emily and strip her family of its generational assets.
“Why now, counselor?” I asked, studying his face. “You helped them bury evidence for years.”
“Because loyalty has an expiration date, Mr. Miller,” Vance whispered bitterly. “And Derek Holt is not worth spending twenty years in a federal penitentiary.”
As I pocketed the affidavit, my phone rang. It wasn't Detective Miller, and it wasn't Emily.

It was an unknown extension from St. Jude Memorial Hospital.
“Mr. Miller?” a trembling voice asked. “You need to get to the hospital immediately. Dr. Vance Sr. just suffered a massive stroke during a closed-board emergency meeting... and before he collapsed, he asked specifically for your daughter.”
