Chapter 17 - The Trap Set in Plain Sight

With the trial nearing its final verdict, Jonathan Thorne made a desperate, reckless gamble. Believing he could still salvage a portion of his hidden overseas assets, Thorne attempted to transmit a coded authorization message to an offshore trustee via an unsecure prison communication channel.

Unfortunately for him, federal intelligence monitors intercepted the transmission within seconds.

Detective Miller and I were reviewing the intercept logs in the District Attorney’s war room when the notification flashed red on our screens.

“He’s trying to drain the Cayman accounts through a proxy signature,” Detective Miller said, typing rapidly on his keyboard. “If that wire transfer clears before the judge delivers the final sentencing, millions of dollars in embezzled funds will vanish into shadow accounts.”

“Can you block it?” I asked.

“We can block it, but we need an authorized digital signature from a primary trust beneficiary to freeze the originating server permanently,” Detective Miller replied, looking at me.

Without hesitation, I reached for my phone and called Emily, who was waiting in the private consultation room upstairs. “Emily, log into your encrypted legal portal right now. We need your digital signature to lock down the Cayman accounts before Thorne’s proxy clears.”

“I’m already on it, Dad,” Emily’s voice came through the phone, steady and focused. “I accessed the secure terminal three minutes ago when I saw the alert on the news feed.”

A moment later, a bright green confirmation banner flashed across our master console: *Account Frozen. Master Proxy Terminated by Authorized Trustee.*

On the other side of the city, inside the federal holding facility, Jonathan Thorne slammed his fists against the visitation glass in blind, incoherent fury as his final escape hatch slammed shut permanently.

The trap had sprung, and every last conspirator was caught inside.
