Chapter 10 - The Collapse of an Empire

The courtroom erupted into sudden chaos. Judge Harrison slammed his gavel three times, the sharp metallic cracks echoing off the vaulted ceiling.
'Order! Order in this courtroom, or I will clear the gallery!' Judge Harrison barked, his face dark with judicial fury.
Daniel stood up abruptly beside his defense table, knocking his chair back with a loud clatter. 'Your Honor, that’s a lie! The prosecution is fabricating evidence! My lawyers—'
'Sit down, Mr. Sterling, before I hold you in direct contempt of court,' Judge Harrison interrupted, his voice cutting through the noise like a razor blade. He turned his piercing gaze toward Richard Vance. 'Counsel, did you verify the digital authenticity of the documents your client handed you this morning?'
Richard Vance turned a shade of pale usually reserved for corpses. He stepped away from Daniel as if the orange jumpsuit were contagious. 'Your Honor, the defense was... we were led to believe by Mr. Sterling that these records were pristine corporate files. We move to withdraw the exhibits immediately.'
'Too late for withdrawals, Mr. Vance,' U.S. Attorney Sterling said smoothly. 'Submitting falsified evidence into a federal proceeding is a Class C felony. Furthermore, given the defendant’s blatant attempt to tamper with judicial proceedings from holding, the prosecution moves to revoke all bail considerations permanently and add three additional felony counts of obstruction of justice.'
Judge Harrison didn't hesitate. 'Bail is permanently denied. All submitted defense exhibits are impounded for criminal investigation. Court adjourned.'
The gavel fell with a final, echoing crash that sounded like the closing of a prison cell door.
As federal marshals stepped forward to grab Daniel by the shoulders, he stared across the courtroom directly at me. His mouth moved, forming silent, venomous curses as they hauled him away in handcuffs.
I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I simply gathered my files, zipped my leather briefcase, and walked out of the courtroom beside Claire.
Outside the federal courthouse, a swarm of reporters blocked the marble steps, thrusting microphones and cameras toward us.
'Ms. Sterling! Is it true your husband framed you?'
'Maya Miller, how did you uncover the offshore accounts?'
Claire stopped on the steps, taking a deep breath of the crisp afternoon air. She looked at the cameras, then at me, before speaking clearly into the microphones.
'My husband built an empire on lies, intimidation, and financial abuse,' Claire said, her voice steady and resonant. 'For years, he made me believe I had no voice, no rights, and no escape. But truth has a way of balancing the ledger. And justice belongs to everyone—not just the wealthy.'

The flashbulbs blinded us for a moment, but we walked past them down the steps, into the sunlight, leaving Daniel’s crumbling empire behind us forever.
