Chapter 5 - The Witness in the Shadows

Sarah Jenkins lived in a modest suburban townhome twenty miles outside the city, far away from the gated waterfront mansion where Daniel and Claire had resided. Her porch light flickered in the drizzle as I pulled my sedan up to the curb.

I checked my watch: 8:45 PM. Perfect timing.

I walked up the concrete steps and knocked firmly on the door. Silence answered. I knocked again, louder.

A heavy deadbolt clicked. The door opened three inches, secured by a steel chain. A woman with tired eyes, messy brown hair, and a sweater pulled tight around her shoulders peered out at me.

'If you're reporters, go away,' Sarah said, her voice trembling. 'I signed an NDA. I have nothing to say about Sterling Wealth Management.'

'I'm not a reporter, Sarah,' I said, holding up my state investigator badge so she could see it clearly through the gap. 'My name is Maya Miller. I’m Claire Sterling’s older sister.'

Sarah froze. The color drained entirely from her face. She stared at my badge, then at my eyes. Slowly, the security chain rattled off the latch, and the door swung open fully.

'You're Claire's sister,' she whispered, stepping back. 'Come inside. Quickly before anyone sees you.'

I stepped into the warm, cluttered entryway. Moving boxes lined the living room wall. It looked like she was packing to leave town.

'You're running,' I observed, setting my briefcase on the kitchen counter.

'Daniel found out I was talking to a divorce lawyer about my severance,' Sarah said, her hands shaking as she poured two cups of tea. 'He sent men to my house last week. They didn't touch me, but they left a brick through my front window with a note: *Silence is expensive, but speaking is fatal.*'

'You don't have to be afraid of him anymore, Sarah. I have his financial records, the Cayman wire transfers, and the proof that he looted the employee pension fund to maintain his lifestyle.'

Sarah let out a bitter, humorless laugh. 'You think Daniel cares about a few spreadsheets? He has political protection, Maya. Half the city council sits on his private advisory board. If you go public with this, his lawyers will bury you in motions until you lose your job, your savings, and your sanity.'

'Not if we strike first, and not if we strike together,' I replied, sliding a flash drive across the table. 'Your five-hundred-thousand-dollar hush money wire? It’s classified as co-conspirator proceeds unless you cooperate with the federal attorney general. If you sign a witness protection affidavit right now, I can secure you full immunity before Daniel realizes what hit him.'

Sarah stared at the flash drive, then at the affidavit I had drafted in my car. Tears welled in her eyes. For six months, she had carried the guilt of covering up a financial crime while watching an innocent woman suffer in silence.

'What do you need me to do?' she asked, her voice steadying.

May you like

'Everything,' I said. 'Start with the master ledger.'
