Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

With Sarah Jenkins’s sworn affidavit and master ledger in hand, the case against Daniel transformed from a domestic dispute into an airtight federal conspiracy. But legal justice moves slowly, and Daniel was actively moving to liquidate his remaining domestic assets to flee the jurisdiction.
It was 2:00 AM—exactly twenty-four hours after Claire had crawled onto my kitchen floor. I sat across from Detective Ethan Hayes in an unmarked federal vehicle parked two blocks from Daniel’s waterfront mansion.
'We have the federal warrant signed by Judge Harrison,' Ethan said, tapping a tablet screen. 'Asset freeze on all Sterling accounts, search and seizure for the primary residence, and an arrest warrant for Daniel Sterling on charges of wire fraud, pension embezzlement, and extortion.'
'Good,' I said, adjusting my jacket. 'Because according to my real-time bank monitoring software, Daniel initiated a wire transfer of four million dollars to a secondary shell company in Panama twenty minutes ago. If we wait until morning, the money will be gone.'
'Then we move now,' Ethan decided, reaching for his radio. 'All units, execute the warrant. Breach and secure.'
Three black SUVs surged forward, their headlights dark until they turned sharply into Daniel’s circular driveway. Officers poured out, rushing the mahogany double doors with tactical precision.
I watched from the federal car as flashbangs illuminated the mansion’s grand windows, followed by shouts echoing through the quiet night air. Ten minutes later, two federal agents emerged, escorting Daniel Sterling in handcuffs.
He wasn't wearing his expensive designer coat. He wore silk pajamas, his hair disheveled, his face twisted in absolute fury as the flashing red and blue lights painted his expression.
As they pushed him toward the squad car, Daniel’s eyes scanned the street and locked onto my unmarked sedan. He saw me sitting in the passenger seat, watching him through the slightly rolled-down window.
He stopped struggling against the agents, wrenching his head toward me with a demonic grin. Even in handcuffs, his arrogance radiated like heat off asphalt.
'You think you won?' Daniel shouted over the wailing sirens, his voice echoing down the street. 'You just destroyed your own family, you ungrateful bitch! Claire will come back to me the second she realizes she has nothing!'
Ethan started to slam the cruiser door shut, but I held up a hand, stepped out of the car, and walked slowly toward Daniel.
The officers parted, recognizing my state badge.
I stopped three feet from him, looking down at his handcuffed wrists.
'Daniel,' I said softly, loud enough only for him to hear. 'You forgot the golden rule of forensic accounting.'
He sneered. 'What's that?'
'Never underestimate the sister of a woman you thought you owned.'

I turned around and walked back to the car as they pushed him into the back of the cruiser.
