Chapter 13 - The Blackmail Network

The federal safehouse was located in a nondescript brick building behind a post office substation downtown. Inside, the windows were reinforced with bulletproof glass, and the walls were lined with secure communication terminals.
U.S. Attorney Sterling and Detective Ethan Hayes sat across from me at a metal table as I placed the black leather notebook between us. The gold-embossed lettering gleamed under the fluorescent desk lamp.
Sterling carefully opened the cover using latex gloves, turning the handwritten pages filled with names, dates, offshore wire receipts, and encrypted digital access codes.
'My God,' Sterling breathed, staring at a page detailing a multi-million-dollar bribe paid to a sitting state appellate judge. 'This isn't just corporate embezzlement. This is a shadow government operating inside our state legislature and judicial system.'
'Daniel wasn't just a wealthy financier,' I explained, pacing across the room. 'He was the clearinghouse for every corrupt politician and judge who needed clean money or dirty favors. Sterling Wealth Management was a front for political bribery on a massive scale.'
'And when you seized the firm’s archives, you walked right into their vault of secrets,' Ethan added, looking at me with a mixture of professional admiration and deep concern. 'Maya, you’ve painted a massive target on your back. The people listed in this book aren't just going to lose their jobs—they're looking at federal penitentiaries. They will stop at nothing to get this notebook back.'
'Let them try,' I said coldly. 'Because I’ve already uploaded an encrypted, timed dead-man’s switch copy of this entire ledger to three independent international servers. If anything happens to me, Claire, or Sarah Jenkins within the next forty-eight hours, the encryption keys automatically release to every major news outlet in the country.'
Sterling looked up sharply. 'You set up a dead-man’s switch without consulting the Department of Justice?'
'I learned from the best,' I replied, offering a thin, humorless smile. 'You taught me that the law only protects you if you survive long enough to use it.'
Sterling rubbed his temples, letting out a long, exhausted sigh. 'All right. What’s your play, Maya? How do we take down this entire syndicate without letting anyone slip through the cracks?'
'We use their own greed against them,' I said, walking back to the table and tapping the open notebook page. 'Every name in this book made regular monthly deposits into Daniel’s primary Cayman holding account. Tomorrow morning, when the federal grand jury convenes, we don't just indict Daniel. We issue simultaneous arrest warrants for every single person who wired money into that account—starting with State Senator Richard Vance Sr. and Appellate Judge Harrison.'
Ethan whistled softly. 'That’s a decapitation strike on the entire state establishment.'
May you like
'Exactly,' I said. 'Let’s start drafting the indictments.'
