Chapter 19 - The New Audit

Six months later, my life had settled into a steady, predictable rhythm of federal casework, quiet evenings at home, and weekend coffee dates with Ethan. The trauma of the Sterling affair had faded into the background, replaced by a deep, enduring sense of professional respect and personal peace.
It was a crisp autumn Saturday morning. I was sitting at my kitchen island with a cup of black coffee, reviewing a routine municipal bond audit for the state treasury, when my secure workstation chimed with a high-priority encrypted ping.
I frowned, setting my coffee mug down. Secure pings on Saturday mornings usually meant trouble.
I clicked open the terminal. A certified data packet from the federal penitentiary records bureau flashed on the screen, accompanied by a scanned handwritten letter addressed directly to me.
I opened the scan. It was Claire’s handwriting—neat, sharp, and deliberate.
*'Dear Maya,*
*I know it’s been six months since we last spoke. I don't expect forgiveness, and I certainly don't expect a reply.*
*But I wanted you to know that the game isn't entirely over. Before Daniel was transferred to maximum security, he managed to smuggle a final set of encrypted ledger keys out through a corrupt guard. They aren't offshore accounts this time. They’re political campaign donations tied to the current Attorney General’s election race five years ago.*
*He’s planning to trade them for a reduced sentence, or worse, use them to bring down everyone who helped clean up his mess—including you.*
*I’m telling you this not because I want redemption, but because a queen never lets someone else checkmate her board.*
*Watch your back, sister.*
*— Claire'*
I stared at the screen, the cold chill of realization washing over me. The Sterling syndicate wasn't completely dead. Daniel was still playing chess from behind concrete walls.
I closed the letter, leaned back in my chair, and slowly smiled.
