Chapter 20 - The Unwritten Chapter

Monday morning arrived with the steady hum of government offices returning to action. The sky over the state capitol was clear and crisp, casting long, sharp shadows across the grand stone steps.
I walked through the revolving glass doors of the state attorney general’s office, wearing my tailored charcoal suit, my sensible heels clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor.
My assistant, a sharp young investigator named Chloe, intercepted me near the elevators, holding a thick stack of green folders.
'Maya, you've got an emergency briefing with the federal task force in ten minutes,' Chloe said briskly. 'It's about an unverified data leak originating from the upstate correctional facility regarding municipal bond fraud and campaign financing.'
I took the folders from her hands, flipping open the top page without breaking my stride.
'Cancel my afternoon meetings, Chloe,' I said smoothly, a confident, cold resolve settling into my voice.
'Cancel them?' Chloe asked, blinking in surprise. 'What's happening?'
I pressed the elevator button, watching the LED numbers tick upward toward our floor. The doors slid open, reflecting my steady, unyielding gaze in the polished steel interior.
'Just a routine audit,' I said, stepping inside and turning to face the lobby. 'It looks like we have a new ledger to balance.'

The elevator doors closed silently, shutting out the world as the cable lifted us upward into the unwritten future.
