Chapter 9 - The Counter-Strike

Armed with the digital metadata analysis proving Daniel had backdated Claire’s signature under coercion and digital forgery, I didn't go back to Ethan Hayes immediately. Instead, I scheduled a confidential meeting with U.S. Attorney Thomas Sterling—no relation to Daniel, thankfully—at a secure federal annex downtown.
U.S. Attorney Sterling adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, reviewing the comparative metadata reports across his mahogany desk. Outside, the midday rain beat against the tall glass windows of the federal building.
'Ms. Miller, you’re presenting evidence that effectively destroys the government’s current narrative regarding your sister’s complicity,' Sterling said, leaning back in his leather chair. 'If these digital timestamps are accurate, Mr. Sterling didn't just forge corporate filings; he systematically entrapped his spouse to use as a legal scapegoat.'
'They are 100% accurate, Mr. Attorney,' I replied, sliding a certified forensic hard drive across the desk. 'Furthermore, Daniel’s primary defense strategy for his upcoming bail hearing tomorrow morning is to blame Claire entirely, presenting her as the ringleader of the Apex Holdings shell scheme.'
Sterling raised an eyebrow. 'And what do you propose? We drop charges against your sister entirely in exchange for her full cooperation as a crown witness?'
'Not just crown witness,' I said, a cold smile touching my lips. 'We let Daniel present his fabricated defense at tomorrow’s bail hearing in front of Judge Harrison. Let him submit his forged documents into official court record. Once he enters fraudulent evidence into a federal proceeding, obstruction of justice becomes an open-and-shut felony.'
Sterling stared at me for a long moment, then let out a slow, appreciative whistle. 'You’re offering us a trap within a trap.'
'Men like Daniel Sterling only understand total devastation,' I said. 'Let him dig his own grave.'
The next morning, Courtroom 302 of the Federal District Court was packed to capacity. Reporters, financial analysts, and curious onlookers crammed into the oak-paneled room, all eager to witness the fall of the financial titan.
Daniel entered in an orange jumpsuit, his hair neatly combed, maintaining his arrogant posture. He flashed a confident smirk toward the press gallery before taking his seat beside his defense team, led by a high-priced attorney named Marcus Vance—wait, no, Richard Vance.
Judge Harrison slammed his gavel. 'We are here to consider the defendant’s motion for bail and review supplemental evidence regarding co-conspirator involvement.'
Richard Vance stood up, buttoning his suit jacket with theatrical flair. 'Your Honor, the defense submits that Mr. Sterling was merely a victim of corporate overreach orchestrated by his estranged wife, Claire Sterling. We have entered into evidence a signed financial authorization ledger proving Mrs. Sterling was the primary beneficiary and operator of Apex Holdings.'
A murmur rippled through the courtroom gallery. Reporters scribbled furiously on their pads.
Judge Harrison looked down at the documents, then glanced at U.S. Attorney Sterling. 'Does the prosecution wish to respond?'
U.S. Attorney Sterling stood up calmly, buttoning his coat. 'Yes, Your Honor. The prosecution not only contests the defense's submission, but we also present supplemental exhibit B: a certified forensic metadata report proving that the documents submitted by the defense were digitally backdated and forged by the defendant twelve hours after his arrest, utilizing unauthorized remote access from his prison tablet.'

Daniel’s smirk vanished instantly. He whipped his head around to stare at his defense attorneys, his face turning pale with sudden, unadulterated panic.
