Chapter 14 - The Final Betrayal

The weekend passed in a blur of sleepless nights, encrypted data transfers, and high-level federal coordination. By Monday morning, the federal grand jury had reviewed the black notebook, verified the wire trails, and signed off on twenty-four sealed arrest warrants for the most powerful political figures in the state.

I stood beside U.S. Attorney Sterling in the operations command center on the third floor of the federal building, watching live satellite feeds and tactical chatter on a wall of monitors.

'Operation Clean Sweep is green across all sectors,' Ethan announced from the tactical console, clicking a mouse to synchronize the simultaneous raids.

'Execute,' Sterling commanded.

Across the city, federal tactical teams breached the homes and offices of corrupt state senators, high-ranking judges, and corporate executives tied to Daniel’s syndicate. News helicopters began broadcasting live aerial footage of politicians in expensive suits being led out of their mansions in handcuffs.

My phone buzzed on the console. It was Claire, calling from my secure apartment.

'Maya, are you seeing this on TV?' Claire’s voice sounded breathless, a mix of shock and relief. 'They’re arresting half the state government!'

'It’s over, Claire,' I said, smiling for the first time in weeks. 'Daniel’s entire network is collapsing. You’re finally safe.'

'Thank God,' she whispered. 'Can I come down to the federal building? I want to be there when you finish this.'

'Of course. Take a cab, use the secure side entrance, and I’ll meet you at the lobby security desk in twenty minutes.'

I hung up, feeling a profound sense of closure washing over me. The nightmare was finally ending.

Ten minutes later, the elevator chime pinged in the lobby corridor. The doors slid open, and Claire stepped out, wearing her dark trench coat and sunglasses.

I walked toward her, arms open to embrace my sister. 'Claire, you made it fast—'

She stopped. She wasn't smiling. Instead, her expression was cold, rigid, and entirely unfamiliar.

Before I could take another step, two men in federal marshal uniforms stepped out of the elevator behind her—men I had never seen before in my unit—and raised their sidearms directly at my chest.

'Maya Miller,' one of them said coldly, flashing a badge. 'You are under arrest for unauthorized extraction of classified federal documents and obstruction of justice.'

I froze, my arms dropping to my sides. I stared past the armed marshals at my sister. Claire slowly removed her sunglasses, her eyes cold, calculating, and devoid of fear.

'I’m sorry, Maya,' Claire said softly, her voice smooth as glass. 'But some debts can only be paid in blood—or paperwork.'
