Chapter 16 - Checkmate

I stood up slowly, towering over Claire in the narrow concrete cell, every trace of shock replaced by a cold, calculating stillness that mirrored her own.
'You think you won, Claire,' I said, my voice steady, cutting through the silence of the cell like glass.
Claire tilted her head, her smile faltering just a fraction. 'I hold the ledger, U.S. Attorney Sterling is detained, and you are locked in a federal holding cell with no badge, no phone, and no way out. How exactly did I lose?'
'Because you made the exact same mistake Daniel made,' I replied, stepping closer until only inches separated us. 'You assumed that because I work for the state, my only loyalties are to institutional paperwork.'
Claire’s eyes narrowed. 'What are you talking about?'
'When I brought the black ledger to the safehouse, I knew something felt off about U.S. Attorney Sterling’s sudden eagerness to cooperate,' I said smoothly. 'So before I handed over the physical notebook, I encrypted every single page with a military-grade quantum cipher linked directly to my personal biometric profile.'
Claire’s face went rigid. 'You’re bluffing.'
'Am I?' I raised my wrists, showing my hands. 'Without my biometric authorization key, that ledger is nothing more than unreadable garbage data. The moment you try to decrypt it on your offshore server, it will trigger an automatic purge protocol that wipes every financial record and offshore account connected to Sterling Wealth Management into permanent digital oblivion.'
For the first time since she walked into the cell, the color drained entirely from Claire’s face. The untouchable queen persona cracked, revealing the desperate, calculating survivor underneath.
'You're lying,' she hissed, grabbing the lapel of my blouse with trembling fingers. 'You wouldn't destroy the evidence! You spent weeks risking your life to expose these people!'
'I exposed corruption to uphold justice, Claire—not to hand a criminal empire from a tyrannical husband to an equally ruthless sister,' I said, gently peeling her fingers off my lapel. 'The dead-man’s switch is already active. Right now, as we stand here, automated federal backup protocols are pinging my secure terminal. If I’m not released within ten minutes, the entire system unlocks live feeds to international human rights and financial crime task forces.'
Claire stared at me, her chest heaving with ragged breaths. She realized the trap had closed around her too.
Heavy footsteps echoed down the concrete hallway outside the cell. The steel door swung open wide, revealing Detective Ethan Hayes accompanied by three armed federal marshals wearing state insignia instead of the rogue unit’s patches.
Ethan looked between Claire and me, his hand resting on his service weapon. 'Maya, are you alright?'
'I'm fine, Ethan,' I said, adjusting my jacket smoothly. 'Please escort Ms. Sterling to the primary holding suite. She has some explaining to do regarding corporate conspiracy and impersonation of federal assets.'
Claire stood frozen as Ethan stepped forward, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. She looked at me one last time, her expression a chilling mix of defeat and profound, twisted respect.
'You really are the dangerous one in the family, aren't you, Maya?' she whispered as the cuffs clicked around her wrists.
May you like
'No, Claire,' I replied as they led her out of the cell. 'I just know how to balance the ledger.'
