Chapter 1 - The Silver Spoon and the Asphalt Dust

The morning sun over Manhattan cast long, golden shadows across the polished glass and steel of the financial district, yet Victoria Vance felt nothing but a chilling sense of absolute superiority. Dressed in a bespoke Italian ivory pantsuit that cost more than a working-class family’s monthly rent, she stepped into her custom-ordered, limited-edition Bentley convertible. Her high heels clicked against the pedals with a sharp, rhythmic arrogance that matched her heartbeat. Victoria was not merely a senior vice-president at Apex Global Enterprises; she was a corporate titan in the making, a shark who smelled blood in every negotiation, and today was the day she would finalize the multi-billion-dollar merger that would cement her legacy forever.
As she navigated the sleek vehicle through the congested downtown traffic, her mind raced with calculations of stock options, hostile takeovers, and crushed competitors. She was so consumed by her own brilliance that she barely noticed the chaotic blur of pedestrians crossing the street against the blinking red light. Suddenly, a small figure in a faded gray hoodie stumbled directly in front of her bumper. Victoria slammed on the brakes with a violent screech of rubber against asphalt, the car stopping a mere hair's breadth from the boy's knees.
Her heart hammered against her ribs, instantly replaced by a surge of pure, unadulterated fury. She threw the car door open with a resounding bang, her eyes blazing as she locked onto the intruder. It was just a kid, no older than twelve or thirteen, with messy dark hair, dirt smudged across his cheek, and a canvas backpack slung loosely over one shoulder. He was crouching on the ground, frantically picking up a scattered handful of cheap, dull coins that had spilled from a torn pocket.
"Are you completely out of your microscopic mind, you little beggar?" Victoria shrieked, her voice cutting through the morning hum of the city like a rusted saw blade. "You're going to scratch my custom paintwork with your filthy, grease-stained hands! Get out of here before I call the authorities and have you thrown into a juvenile detention center where you belong! Go crawl back to whatever alley you crawled out of and beg for loose change somewhere else!"
The boy stopped moving his hands. For a fraction of a second, the bustling noise of the metropolis seemed to fade away entirely. He slowly lifted his head, revealing a face that was remarkably calm, untouched by the panic or intimidation Victoria expected to see. Instead, his dark eyes held a chilling, piercing depth that momentarily made Victoria’s breath hitch in her throat. It wasn't the look of a frightened street urchin; it was the look of a predator studying a trapped insect.
"You really should watch where you're driving, ma'am," the boy replied, his voice eerily steady, devoid of any childish tremble. "A shiny exterior doesn't mean much if the engine underneath is completely rotten."
"How dare you talk back to me, you insolent little parasite?" Victoria scoffed, stepping closer and looking down her nose at him with pure disdain. She reached into her pocket, pulled out a tarnished nickel, and tossed it violently onto the pavement right beside his remaining coins, watching it bounce against the wet street. "Here. Take your pathetic little fortune and crawl away. People like you don't belong in polite society, let alone the financial district."
The boy didn't flinch. He slowly reached down, picked up the nickel, and slipped it into his pocket alongside the rest of the coins. As he stood up, he casually brushed a speck of dirt off his jeans and looked directly into Victoria's eyes with an unnerving, enigmatic smile playing at the corners of his lips.

"Remember that nickel, Victoria," the boy whispered quietly, turning on his heel and walking away without looking back. "It might just be the most expensive lesson you'll ever learn."
Victoria scoffed, shaking her head at the sheer audacity of the street rat as she climbed back into her Bentley. She checked her Rolex watch; she had a high-stakes meeting at Apex Global headquarters in twenty minutes, and nothing—not even a street urchin with an attitude—was going to stand in her way. She hit the gas pedal, roaring down the avenue, completely oblivious to the fact that her entire world was about to collapse.
