Chapter 12 - The Vanguard Summit

The annual Vanguard Global Innovation Summit was the most prestigious technology and economic conference in the Western Hemisphere, drawing thousands of industry leaders, policymakers, brilliant researchers, and young entrepreneurs to the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan. The main auditorium was packed to absolute capacity, the air thick with anticipation as attendees waited for the opening keynote address by Julian Vance.
Backstage, Julian stood adjusting his silk tie in front of a full-length mirror. At eighteen years old, he commanded an aura of quiet, unshakable authority that made veterans of industry stand a little straighter when he entered a room. Yet, beneath his calm exterior, his mind drifted back to where it all began—the asphalt street, the scattered coins, the arrogant scream of a woman who thought her bank account made her a god.
Arthur Sterling stepped into the green room, holding a sleek digital tablet. "Julian, the live stream is currently broadcasting to over forty million viewers globally. The prime minister's office just confirmed their attendance, and every major media outlet is locked in."
"Thank you, Arthur," Julian replied calmly, turning away from the mirror. "Are the foundation’s new educational grant allocations finalized for the upcoming fiscal year?"
"Yes, all set," Arthur nodded with a respectful smile. "Three hundred million dollars directed straight into community-based technology centers in underserved urban neighborhoods."
Julian nodded approvingly. "Good. Let's make sure there's no corporate bureaucracy attached to those funds. People need real support, not red tape."
As the house lights in the massive auditorium dimmed and the introductory music swelled through the state-of-the-art sound system, the announcer's voice boomed across the hall: "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of V-Tech Holdings, Mr. Julian Vance!"
A thunderous wave of applause erupted through the convention center as Julian walked out onto the brightly lit stage. He didn't rush to the podium; he walked with a steady, measured pace, acknowledging the crowd with a polite nod before stepping up to the microphone.
He looked out across a sea of thousands of eager faces—investors, engineers, dreamers, and leaders. But as his eyes swept over the front rows, he noticed something unexpected. Sitting quietly in the designated staff section near the back of the media riser was a woman wearing a simple, professional blouse, her hair neat, her expression humble and attentive.
It was Victoria Vance. She wasn't running a corporation anymore, and she wasn't sweeping the streets either. She was working quietly behind the scenes as a logistical coordinator for the non-profit foundation, helping manage the very youth programs Julian’s trust funded.

Julian paused for a fraction of a second, locking eyes with her across the vast auditorium. Victoria didn't look away in shame; she met his gaze with a quiet, respectful nod of acknowledgment.
Julian smiled faintly, turned back to the microphone, and began his address.
