Chapter 8 - The Rise of a New Era

Three months passed, and the financial district of Manhattan had undergone a seismic transformation. The towering glass monolith that once bore the proud lettering of *APEX GLOBAL* now displayed a sleek, minimalist steel logo: *V-TECH HOLDINGS*. The hostile takeover had been completed with surgical precision, merging what remained of Apex into the sprawling technological ecosystem of Vanguard Tech.
Inside the executive boardroom on the fifty-fourth floor, the atmosphere was entirely different from the oppressive, fearful environment of the past. Natural light flooded through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating a room that now bustled with young, brilliant engineers, data scientists, and ethical strategists rather than ruthless corporate sharks.
Julian Vance sat at the head of the massive mahogany table, casually tapping a stylus against his tablet as he reviewed the quarterly philanthropic disbursement reports. At thirteen years old, he was the youngest multi-billionaire in global history, but the media frenzy surrounding his identity had largely subsided, replaced by a deep, cautious respect from the business community. He didn't wear hoodies in the boardroom anymore; he wore tailored suits that projected authority, yet he never forgot the lessons of his father—or the harsh reminder of human nature he had encountered on the asphalt street.
Arthur Sterling, who had retained his position as senior legal counsel due to his quick alignment with the new administration, stepped into the boardroom carrying a thick leather portfolio.
"Julian, the restructuring of the European subsidiaries is complete," Arthur reported, placing the folder on the desk. "And the Vanguard Educational Foundation has officially enrolled over ten thousand underprivileged students across the country this semester alone."
Julian looked up from his tablet, a subtle smile touching his lips. "Good. Make sure the scholarship grants are disbursed directly to their accounts without bureaucratic delays, Arthur. Education is the only equalizer that truly matters in this world."
"Will do, Julian," Arthur nodded, hesitating for a moment before continuing. "There's... one other matter. It's regarding Victoria Vance."
Julian's expression hardened slightly, the easygoing demeanor vanishing instantly. He set the stylus down and leaned back in his chair. "What about her? I thought she was facing federal indictments for securities fraud."
"She was," Arthur replied, opening a smaller folder. "Her trial concluded this morning. Because she liquidated her remaining hidden assets to pay off legal fees, and because she cooperated with the federal prosecutors by testifying against some of her former co-conspirators, the judge handed down a reduced sentence: five years probation, community service, and a lifetime ban from holding any corporate officer position."
Julian listened in silence, his dark eyes fixed on the city skyline outside the window where tiny ants of cars crawled along the asphalt avenues far below.
"Where is she now?" Julian asked quietly.
"She's working, Julian," Arthur said, a hint of irony in his voice. "Community service placement. The court assigned her to sanitation and public maintenance duty for the city's downtown transit authority. Sanitation department. Cleaning the streets."

Julian let out a soft, contemplative breath. He remembered the exact spot where she had screamed at him, where she had tossed a tarnished nickel onto the wet pavement and told him to crawl away. Karma had a poetic way of balancing its books.
"Make sure she's treated fairly, Arthur," Julian said after a long pause. "No special privileges, but no unnecessary cruelty either. Let her experience what it's like to build something from the ground up, starting with a broom and a dustpan."
