Chapter 10 - The Phantom Investor

Two years later, the corporate landscape of New York had stabilized under the innovative leadership of Julian Vance, who was now fifteen and widely recognized as a generational genius whose philanthropic initiatives had reshaped urban education. V-Tech Holdings was posting record profits, driven by ethical AI development and sustainable infrastructure projects that prioritized human welfare alongside capital growth.
Yet, despite his immense success, Julian remained an elusive figure in high society, rarely attending public galas or media interviews, preferring to operate from behind the security of his private research lab and boardrooms.
One crisp autumn evening, Arthur Sterling walked into Julian’s private office carrying a sealed, heavy cream envelope bearing no return address, stamped with an international courier mark from Zurich.
"Julian, you need to see this," Arthur said, placing the envelope on the desk. "It arrived via diplomatic pouch through our Swiss banking partners. It's addressed personally to you."
Julian looked up from his holographic terminal, raising an eyebrow. He picked up a letter opener and slit the seal, pulling out a thick piece of heavy parchment paper written in elegant, old-fashioned cursive ink.
*Dear Julian,*
*If you are reading this, it means you have successfully navigated the turbulent waters of corporate warfare and proven that true power lies not in dominance, but in character.*
*Twenty years ago, my family built the foundations of Vance Industries upon ruthless ambition, sacrificing human compassion for market share. When I passed away and left my estate to my son Alexander—your father—I feared the corporate machine would consume him just as it consumed me. When he died, I watched from the shadows as you took up his mantle.*
*I wanted to see if you possessed the wisdom to wield absolute power without losing your soul. The day you stood on the street in that gray hoodie, picking up loose change while a foolish executive screamed at you, was not an accident. It was a test orchestrated by my closest trustees to observe your temperament under unprovoked abuse.*
*You passed with absolute distinction.*
*Effective immediately, the remaining hidden reserves of the original Vance family trust—valued at over twelve billion dollars in untracked global assets—have been officially transferred into your personal custody. You are no longer just the chairman of Vanguard Tech. You are the sole heir to the entire legacy.*
*Use it wisely.*
*— Your Grandfather, Harrison Vance.*
Julian sat in absolute silence, staring at the signature at the bottom of the page. Harrison Vance—the legendary patriarch of the Vance financial dynasty, whom everyone believed had died in a private plane crash off the coast of Monaco when Julian was an infant, had been watching him the entire time.
Arthur watched Julian closely, sensing the seismic weight of the letter. "Julian... what does this mean?"
May you like
Julian folded the letter neatly, placed it back into the cream envelope, and looked out the window toward the glittering lights of the Manhattan skyline.
"It means, Arthur," Julian said softly, a faint, knowing smile playing on his lips, "that the game was never about who owned the most shares. It was about who had the strength to change the rules."
