Chapter 4 - The Fall from Grace

The security guards arrived within sixty seconds. They didn't use physical force—they didn't need to—because Victoria Vance was already a walking ghost, completely paralyzed by the sheer magnitude of her catastrophic failure. As two burly men in black suits flanked her sides, she stumbled out of the executive boardroom and down the private corridor, her white designer stilettos clicking erratically against the floor.

Employees along the hallway stopped typing, whispering behind cupped hands as they watched the invincible queen of corporate takeovers being escorted off the premises like a common criminal. Victoria kept her eyes glued to the floor, her face burning with a mixture of humiliation and blinding rage. She had spent fifteen years clawing her way to the top, stepping on anyone who got in her way, believing that power was the only currency that mattered in this world—and in a single morning, a thirteen-year-old boy had stripped it all away with a flick of his wrist.

When she reached the ground floor lobby, her leather handbag was tossed onto the marble floor beside her by a security guard who didn't even bother to look her in the eye.

"Have a nice day, Ms. Vance," the guard said flatly before turning his back.

Victoria dropped to her knees, her manicured fingers digging into the expensive leather of her bag as she frantically pulled out her smartphone. Her hands were shaking so violently she dropped the device twice before finally unlocking the screen. She dialed the private number of CEO Robert Sterling, the head of Apex Global and Arthur's older brother, who had personally mentored her and backed her rise to power.

The phone rang three times before a cold, clipped voice answered on the other end. "Vance. This better be good. I'm in the middle of emergency damage control."

"Robert! You have to listen to me!" Victoria cried out, tears of pure frustration springing to her eyes as she ignored the stares of passing receptionists. "It's a catastrophe! The Vanguard merger—it's gone! Julian Vance, the owner, he... he canceled it! He fired me on the spot!"

There was a long, suffocating silence on the other end of the line. When Robert spoke again, his voice was devoid of any warmth or mentorship—it sounded like cold steel sliding out of a sheath.

"I know all about it, Victoria," Robert said slowly. "Arthur called me five minutes ago. Do you have any idea what you've done? Vanguard Tech wasn't just another acquisition target; they hold the exclusive patents for our next-generation quantum server architecture. Without them, our stock is going to open tomorrow morning down at least forty percent. The board of directors is convening an emergency session right now to discuss liability."

"Liability?" Victoria gasped, her voice rising in panic. "Robert, I made a mistake! I didn't know he was the owner! It was a misunderstanding on the street—"

"A misunderstanding?" Robert roared over the phone, his professional composure snapping entirely. "You insulted the majority shareholder of our most vital strategic partner, threw loose change at him like a peasant, and threatened to have him thrown in jail! And worst of all, Victoria... Julian Vance isn't just some random kid holding shares. He is the grandson of our founding financial backer, and he holds absolute veto power over every single asset Apex Global owns. He didn't just cancel the merger—he has initiated a hostile buyout of our entire corporation."

Victoria's phone slipped from her limp fingers, clattering loudly against the marble floor. The screen shattered into a web of glowing cracks. She sat there on her knees in the middle of the bustling lobby, surrounded by the very empire she thought she ruled, realizing that she was completely, irrevocably ruined.
