Chapter 7 - Exile in the Shadows

While the board was signing away their empire underground, Victoria Vance sat alone in a dimly lit corner booth of a cheap diner three blocks away from the Apex Global tower. The neon sign outside flickered with an annoying, high-pitched buzz, casting an sickly pink glow over her face. She hadn't bothered to wipe away her smeared mascara; her hair was coming undone from its once-impeccable bun, and her expensive ivory pantsuit was stained with coffee she had accidentally spilled on herself while fleeing the building.
For the first time in her life, Victoria was invisible. The waitresses didn't rush to serve her; the other customers didn't whisper about her wealth or status. To the rest of the world, she was just another disheveled, pathetic woman sitting alone in a booth, nursing a cup of lukewarm, bitter coffee that tasted like burnt rubber.
Her phone buzzed violently against the sticky tabletop. She snatched it up with desperate hope, thinking it might be Robert calling to tell her the board had fought back, that they had found a loophole, that everything was back to normal. But when she unlocked the screen, her heart plummeted into her stomach.
It was an automated notification from her banking app.
*Account Balance: $412.50.*
Victoria let out a sharp gasp, her fingers tapping furiously against the screen as she navigated through her financial portfolio. Every single corporate account, stock option, performance bonus, and liquidity reserve had been frozen by the compliance audit. Her luxury apartment lease was tied to her corporate sponsorship, which meant she had forty-eight hours to vacate the premises. Her luxury vehicles were registered under Apex Global corporate leasing, meaning repossession agents were already en route to tow them away.
"No... no, this is impossible," Victoria muttered to herself, her voice shaking as tears of rage and panic finally spilled over her eyelids. "I earned that money! I worked eighty-hour weeks! I crushed the competition! They can't just take it all away!"
"Actually, ma'am, they can when it's built on a foundation of stolen equity and corporate corruption."
Victoria whipped her head around. Standing beside her booth was a tall man in a sharp gray suit with an impassive expression. He held a thick manila envelope in one hand and placed it squarely on the sticky table right in front of her coffee cup.
"Who are you?" Victoria demanded, her voice trembling as she glared up at him. "Are you from the media? If you're here to take pictures—"
"I am Arthur Sterling’s personal legal associate," the man interrupted coldly. "I'm here to serve you with formal legal notifications regarding your termination, asset forfeiture, and ongoing investigations into insider trading and financial manipulation during your tenure at Apex Global."
Victoria stared at the manila envelope as if it were a venomous snake. "Insider trading? That's absurd! Everyone in the district bends the rules! You can't single me out!"
"We aren't singling you out, Ms. Vance. We're simply applying the law," the lawyer replied flatly. "Furthermore, Mr. Julian Vance has instructed us to inform you that you are permanently blacklisted from every financial institution, venture capital firm, and corporate entity in North America. Your career in finance is officially over."

Before Victoria could scream, before she could throw her coffee cup at his face, the lawyer turned on his heel and walked out of the diner, disappearing into the rainy evening crowd.
Victoria sat frozen in the flickering neon light, the heavy manila envelope resting on the table like a tombstone. The wheel of fortune had spun, crushing her beneath its weight, and there was nowhere left for her to run.
