Chapter 10 - The Phoenix RISING

Three weeks after the aborted wedding, Halcyon Hotels underwent the largest corporate restructuring in New York’s hospitality history.

Under my direct leadership as Chairperson and CEO, every corrupt executive tied to the Vale syndicate was purged from the upper management tiers. In their place, I appointed talented, hardworking managers who had spent years being overlooked by the old guard.

The global headquarters on the 50th floor of Halcyon Tower buzzed with renewed energy.

I stood by the panoramic glass windows of my corner office, looking down at the sunlit streets of Manhattan. The autumn leaves had turned vibrant shades of gold and copper, swirling in the crisp breeze.

My office door opened softly. My father, Julian Ward, stepped inside, carrying two cups of hot black coffee.

“Thinking about the trial?” Julian asked gently, handing me a cup before walking over to stand beside me.

“Not really,” I replied, taking a sip of the rich, dark roast. “Adrian’s trial is scheduled for November, and with the airtight evidence Arthur compiled, his conviction is virtually guaranteed. I was just thinking about how close I came to walking down that aisle as Mrs. Adrian Vale.”

“You dodged a missile, sweetheart,” Julian chuckled softly, wrapping a warm arm around my shoulders. “Though I must admit, watching you handle that boardroom ambush was the proudest moment of my life. Your mother would have loved you.”

“She would have told me I was too soft on them,” I smiled, leaning my head against my father’s shoulder.

My phone buzzed on the nearby desk. Arthur Sterling’s name flashed on the screen.

I answered immediately. “Arthur, what is it?”

*“Elena, you need to see this,”* Arthur’s voice sounded tense, urgent, but laced with a strange note of disbelief. *“A visitor just walked into the ground-floor reception desk. She’s demanding to speak with you personally.”*security guard reported her name.”

“Who is it?” I asked, narrowing my eyes slightly.

*“Celeste Vale.”*red-handed.”

I paused, a cold smile touching my lips. “Celeste? I thought she fled to Europe after her Swiss accounts were frozen.”

*“So did the FBI,”* Arthur replied. *“Apparently, she was hiding out in a private yacht off Montauk when the marshals seized her remaining credit cards. She’s completely broke, desperate, and she managed to slip past media security into our lobby.”*wanted with me.”

“Send her up,” I instructed calmly. “Let’s see what an empire builder has to say when she has nothing left.”

Ten minutes later, the private elevator chimed. The heavy glass doors slid open.

Celeste Vale stepped out into the executive lobby.

Gone was the immaculate society matriarch draped in diamonds and designer furs. She wore a rumpled trench coat, her hair was unstyled and streaked with gray, and her eyes were wild, bloodshot, and frantic.

She took two steps toward my office before Halcyon security guards moved to block her path.

“Let her pass,” I said, stepping out of my office doorway into the open hallway, my arms folded loosely across my chest.

Celeste glared at me, her chest heaving with venomous hatred. She looked as though she wanted to lunge across the marble floor and tear my throat out with her bare hands.

“You ruined us,” Celeste hissed, her voice trembling with raw, unadulterated fury. “You destroyed everything the Vale family built over three generations!”

“We didn't destroy anything, Celeste,” I replied, my voice calm, steady, and devastatingly polite. “We simply exposed the rotten foundation you built it on.”

Celeste took a sharp, desperate breath, her expression twisting into something dangerously unhinged.
