Chapter 5 - The Fall of the House of Vale

The silence in the boardroom was so profound you could hear the faint hum of the air filtration system overhead.
Adrian gripped the edge of the mahogany table so hard his knuckles turned ghostly white. His chest heaved as panic clawed its way up his throat.
“No,” Adrian breathed, shaking his head in manic denial. “No, no, no! This is a setup! You’re just a foster nobody from the county welfare system! Julian Ward doesn’t even have a daughter—everyone knows his only child died in a hospital fire twenty years ago!”
Julian Ward stepped forward, his eyes burning with a terrifying, paternal fury that made even the seasoned board members shrink back.
“My daughter didn't die in a fire, Adrian,” Julian said, his voice deep and resonant. “The hospital records were falsified by a corrupt adoption ring operating under bribes paid by none other than your mother, Celeste Vale, who wanted to ensure her own bloodline controlled my estate.”
Julian slammed a thick historical dossier onto the table, scattering certified birth certificates, DNA test results, and wire-transfer receipts across the polished wood.
“When my investigators finally tracked Elena down three years ago,” Julian continued, “she was living independently, refusing to use my name or my money because she wanted to earn her place in this company on her own merits. She wanted to know who her colleagues truly were when they thought she had nothing.”
Adrian slowly turned his head to look at me, his expression twisting from arrogant rage into sheer, unadulterated horror.
“You... you tested me,” he whispered, his voice trembling like a leaf in a gale. “Every clumsy mistake I baited you with... every time you stayed quiet when I put you down... you were watching me.”
“I gave you every opportunity to prove yourself, Adrian,” I said quietly, my gaze unblinking as I met his terrified eyes. “I watched you exploit employees, bully junior executives, and scheme behind my back to steal my family's legacy. And last night, you finally proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are not just a toxic partner—you are a criminal.”
“Arrest them,” Arthur Sterling instructed calmly, nodding toward the boardroom doors.
Before Adrian or Greg could move toward the exit, two federal marshals and four corporate security officers stepped into the room, their badges gleaming under the recessed lighting.
“Adrian Vale, Gregory Vance,” the lead marshal announced, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, extortion, and interstate financial conspiracy.”
“Get your hands off me!” Adrian thrashed wildly as the cuffs clicked onto his wrists, his expensive custom suit tearing at the shoulder as officers pinned his arms behind his back. “Elena! ELENA! You can’t do this to me! We were supposed to be married! We loved each other!”
“I loved the man I thought you were, Adrian,” I replied coldly, standing up from my chair and buttoning my jacket. “The man standing there is just a coward who hits women when things don't go his way.”
“You'll pay for this!” Greg screamed as he was dragged backward out the double doors, kicking his legs in helpless rage. “The Vale family will ruin you! You hear me? RUIN YOU!”
The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them, cutting off their shrieks.
The boardroom remained dead silent for several seconds.
Then, CEO Marcus Vance cleared his throat, stood up, and bowed slightly toward my chair. “Welcome home, Ms. Ward. Shall we proceed with the operational restructuring?”
I looked around the table at the twelve directors, many of whom had secretly colluded with Adrian’s faction over the past year.
“Yes, Marcus,” I said smoothly, a predatory smile touching the corners of my lips. “Let’s clean house. Every single executive who signed off on Adrian’s fraudulent transfer requests is to be terminated by noon.”
“Right away, Chairman Ward,” Marcus replied, scrambling to gather his tablet.
As the meeting dispersed, I walked to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking down at the bustling streets of Manhattan far below.

My cheek still stung slightly where Adrian had struck me. But as I watched two federal police cruisers pull out of the underground garage with sirens wailing, I knew the wound had already begun to heal.
