Chapter 11 - The Desperate Plea

The silence in the executive lobby stretched thin and tense.
Celeste Vale stood trembling before me, her manicured fingers clawing desperately at the fabric of her rumpled coat as if searching for a weapon she no longer possessed.
“You think you’re untouchable now, don’t you?” Celeste sneered, her voice cracking with bitter malice. “Sitting in your ivory tower, playing empress with stolen assets! But you’re nothing, Elena! Without Adrian, without my family name to give you legitimacy, you’re still just a filthy little foster brat living off charity!”
I didn't flinch. I didn't raise my voice. I simply stepped closer, looking down at her with calm, unyielding pity.
“If my name is worthless, Celeste, why are you standing here in my lobby begging for an audience?” I asked quietly.
Celeste’s face flushed an ugly, mottled red. The defiance in her eyes flickered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a terrifying, desperate panic.
“I’m not begging,” she spat out defensively, though her voice shook violently. “I’m here to offer you a deal. A truce.”
“A truce?” I raised an eyebrow, unable to suppress a dry, humorless chuckle. “From a woman currently facing federal racketeering charges and total asset forfeiture? What on earth could you possibly have left to trade?”
Celeste glanced nervously around the lobby, ensuring the security guards were standing out of earshot before leaning in close.
“The offshore accounts in Zurich weren't the only ones,” Celeste whispered frantically. “There’s another vault. A private safety deposit box in Geneva containing documents, corporate ledgers, and compromising agreements involving half the senior politicians and senators on the congressional hospitality committee.”
I stared at her, my expression hardening into absolute focus.
“Go on,” I prompted quietly.
“If you drop all civil lawsuits against me, guarantee Adrian a reduced plea deal with zero prison time, and transfer five percent of Halcyon’s European holdings into my name... I’ll hand over the encryption keys to that Geneva vault,” Celeste hissed, her eyes gleaming with desperate avarice. “With those files, you could control Washington policy for the next decade. It’s worth billions, Elena.”
I looked at her for a long, quiet moment, weighing her words against everything I knew about her character.
Then, I let out a soft, cold laugh.
“You truly haven't learned a single thing, have you, Celeste?”
“What are you talking about?!” Celeste snapped, her manic panic returning in full force. “That’s a goldmine! That’s real power!”
“Power isn’t built on blackmail, extortion, and secret vaults of dirt,” I said, stepping past her toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the vibrant city below. “Power is built on transparency, integrity, and absolute strength. When you traded in manipulation, you forgot that sooner or later, the house of cards always collapses.”
“You stupid, arrogant little fool!” Celeste shrieked, losing all remaining shreds of composure as she lunged forward. “You’ll regret this! The people whose names are in that vault won't let you destroy us! They’ll crush you before the trial even begins!”
“Let them try,” I whispered without turning around.
I raised my hand slightly, signaling Marcus.
Two security guards immediately stepped forward, gently but firmly grasping Celeste by her arms and lifting her off balance.
“Get your hands off me! Let me go! ELENA!” Celeste screamed, thrashing wildly as she was dragged backward toward the private elevator. “You haven't won! This isn't over! I’ll see you in hell!”
The elevator doors slid open, swallowed her shrieking frame, and closed with a heavy, final thud.
The lobby fell silent once more.
Arthur Sterling stepped out of my office, holding a secure flash drive he had retrieved from his briefcase.
“Well,” Arthur murmured dryly, adjusting his tie. “That was certainly entertaining. Do you think she actually had another vault in Geneva?”
“It doesn't matter whether she did or not,” I replied, turning away from the window to face my attorney. “Even if she did, we don't build our empire on stolen secrets. We build it on truth.”
“Agreed,” Arthur smiled. “Speaking of truth, the federal prosecutor called five minutes ago. Adrian has decided to change his plea.”
I paused, my eyes locking onto Arthur’s. “Change his plea to what?”
May you like
“Guilty on all counts.”
