Chapter 14 - The Unwritten Chapter

I stopped just inside the doorway of the private study, looking at Marcus with a mixture of surprise and genuine amusement.
“Marcus? I thought you were supposed to be managing the London expansion gala tonight,” I said, resting my hand lightly against the doorframe.
“I handed the London portfolio over to Arthur for the evening,” Marcus replied smoothly, walking toward me with an easy, relaxed stride. He held out the single white rose. “I figured celebrating the resurrection of Halcyon right here at home was far more important.”
I accepted the rose, running my fingers lightly over its velvety petals. “You’ve been working twenty-hour weeks for the past six months, Marcus. You didn't have to slip away from the gala just to hand me a flower.”
“I didn't slip away,” Marcus corrected softly, stopping just a few feet away from me, his dark eyes warm and steady. “I came here to see you—not as your director of acquisitions, not as your security lead, but simply as a man who has had the immense privilege of watching you reclaim your kingdom.”
A quiet warmth bloomed in my chest. Unlike Adrian, who had constantly tried to shrink my world to make himself feel tall, Marcus had spent every step of this journey standing shoulder to shoulder with me, amplifying my strength without ever demanding control.
“You know,” I murmured, tilting my head with a slight smile, “most people in your position would be intimidated by a woman who controls fifty-one percent of a global hotel empire.”
“Most men aren't looking to be intimidated or coddled, Elena,” Marcus replied, his voice dropping into a gentle, resonant timbre. “They’re looking for an equal partner. Someone who knows how to weather a storm and still smile through the rain.”
I looked up into his eyes, remembering the exact moment in the cathedral months ago when I had taken off my ring, walked out into the rain, and decided I would never let anyone dictate my worth again.
How far away that lifetime felt now.
“So,” I smiled, stepping a little closer, “what happens next, Marcus? Now that the empire is secure, the enemies are behind bars, and the foundation is rock solid?”
Marcus reached out, gently taking my hand in his, his thumb brushing reassuringly over my knuckles.
“Whatever you want it to be,” he said softly. “We write the next chapters together. No scripts, no hidden agreements, no chains.”
I looked down at our intertwined hands—no diamond rings yet, no rushed ultimatums, just two people choosing each other freely, out of mutual respect and unbreakable trust.
“I like the sound of that,” I whispered.
Outside the panoramic windows, the lights of New York City stretched endlessly into the horizon, pulsing with bright, unyielding promise.
The wedding day that had started in violence and tears was now nothing more than a distant memory—a tragic prologue to a story that I had finally authored entirely on my own terms.

And as I stood there in the arms of the man who honored my strength, I knew that the best chapters of my life had only just begun.
