Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The penthouse suite atop the Grand Azure Hotel was the crown jewel of the Halcyon portfolio—a sprawling, two-story glass sanctuary overlooking Central Park.

Following the board meeting, I had chosen to stay here rather than return to my father’s estate, wanting to oversee the corporate restructuring firsthand.

It was past midnight. The city below hummed with a distant, rhythmic energy, thousands of yellow cabs tracing glowing lines across the asphalt grid.

I sat at the minimalist marble desk in the master study, reviewing the finalized audit reports on my tablet. My security detail, led by Marcus—who had officially transitioned from my personal driver to head of executive protection—had swept the entire floor twice.

Yet, an inexplicable chill prickled at the back of my neck.

I set the tablet down and walked to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the dark expanse of Central Park. The trees swayed in the autumn wind like skeletal fingers against the moonlight.

My phone buzzed on the desk. An incoming encrypted alert from Marcus.

*“Boss. Perimeter sensors on the 48th-floor service balcony just tripped. Checking camera feeds now.”*complex silence followed.

I immediately reached into the velvet-lined drawer of my desk, pulling out a sleek, matte-black Walther PPK—a weapon my father had insisted I learn how to handle during my years undercover.

Click. The safety slipped off with a crisp, reassuring sound.

Suddenly, the smart-home lighting system throughout the penthouse flickered violently and died, plunging the sprawling suite into absolute darkness.

Alarms didn't sound. The building's entire electrical grid had been cleanly, silently severed at the main junction box—an operation requiring professional military-grade EMP or hardline slicing.

“Marcus?” I spoke quietly into my lapel communicator. “Marcus, report.”

Only static hissed through the earpiece.

My heart pounded against my ribs, but my mind remained ice-cold. Adrenaline flooded my veins, sharpening every sense.

Someone was inside the penthouse.

Footsteps—so light they sounded like falling leaves—padded softly across the hardwood flooring of the hallway outside the study.

I slipped away from the desk, melting silently into the deep shadows beside the heavy velvet drapery.

The study door slowly creaked open. A sliver of moonlight cut across the room, illuminating a tall, broad-shouldered figure clad entirely in matte-black tactical gear, holding a suppressed automatic rifle.

The intruder stepped inside, scanning the empty desk with professional precision.

“Target not at desk,” a low, mechanical whisper hissed through a comm-link attached to the intruder's collar.

“Check the bedroom,” a second voice echoed from the hallway outside.

I didn't wait for them to search further.

Stepping out from the shadows behind the intruder, I leveled the Walther directly at the center of his tactical vest.

“Drop the weapon,” I commanded, my voice cold as arctic ice.

The mercenary reacted with terrifying speed, spinning around in a fluid, deadly arc, his rifle barrel swinging toward my chest.

I pulled the trigger.

Bang!

The gunshot roared through the quiet penthouse like thunder. The mercenary cried out, his rifle clattering to the floor as his shoulder buckled under the impact.

Before he could recover, I lunged forward, slamming the butt of my pistol hard against the side of his helmet. He collapsed onto the rug, unconscious.

Instantly, heavy boots thundered down the hallway. The second assassin burst through the doorway, leveling his weapon.

I dove sideways behind the heavy mahogany desk as a hail of silenced bullets chewed through the wood, sending splinters flying in all directions.

“Elena Ward!” the second assassin shouted over the din, advancing cautiously toward the desk. “Your mother-in-law sends her regards!”

He rounded the desk, raising his rifle for the fatal shot—

Thwack!

A heavy ebony cane suddenly swept across the assassin’s legs from behind, tripping him violently to the floor.

Julian Ward stepped out from the private elevator alcove, his face twisted in cold fury, slamming his heavy cane down across the assassin’s wrist with bone-crushing force.

The man screamed, dropping his weapon as Marcus swarmed in behind Julian, subduing the attacker with a swift chokehold until he went limp.

The penthouse fell silent once more, save for the heavy breathing echoing off the glass walls.

I stood up slowly from behind the desk, brushing a speck of dust off my trousers, keeping my pistol firmly leveled.

“Are you alright, sweetheart?” Julian asked, his voice shaking slightly as he rushed forward to inspect my uninjured form.

“I’m fine, Dad,” I replied steadily, looking down at the two bound mercenaries lying on the floor. “Looks like Celeste’s desperation is getting sloppy.”

“Not sloppy, Elena,” Julian said grimly, picking up a secure satellite phone dropped by the first assassin. “Desperate animals bite the hardest when they're cornered.”

I looked down at the blinking screen of the satellite phone, where an outgoing call to a private Swiss number was still active.

“Let’s see who she’s calling next,” I murmured, tapping the speaker icon.
