Chapter 8 - The Swiss Vault

Through the speaker of the intercepted satellite phone, a cold, synthesized voice crackled across the quiet room.

*“Report. Is the target neutralized?”*

Julian exchanged a sharp glance with me. Without missing a beat, I adjusted my tone, pitching my voice slightly lower to match the secure frequency interference.

“Complication,” I rasped, imitating the wounded mercenary’s gruff cadence. “Security was heavier than expected. Primary team is compromised. We need extraction.”

A heavy sigh echoed from the other end of the line, followed by the sound of expensive crystal glassware clinking against a table.

*“Incompetent fools,”* Celeste Vale’s voice hissed through the secure channel, dripping with venom. *“I pay you millions in untraceable retainers, and you can’t even handle one arrogant little foster girl? Never mind. The local cleanup crew has already been notified. Once the police find your bodies in the harbor, the media will rule it a botched burglary.”*

“And what about the remaining funds in the Swiss depository?” I asked, keeping my voice steady while signaling Marcus to trace the signal origin.

*“The Swiss accounts are locked behind biometric verification and multi-signature corporate keys held only by me and Adrian,”* Celeste scoffed arrogantly. *“Even if that little bitch seizes Halcyon, she’ll never touch the offshore billions stashed in Zurich. That’s our insurance policy for when we buy our way out of federal custody.”*

“Good to know, Celeste,” I said, dropping the disguise entirely and speaking in my normal, calm, crystal-clear voice.

A sharp gasp echoed from the Zurich end of the line.

*“Elena?!”* Celeste shrieked, the panic in her voice palpable. *“How... how are you answering on this phone? Where are my men?!”*

“Your men are currently enjoying a complimentary pair of federal zip-ties and a very long conversation with Marcus,” I replied smoothly, walking over to the coffee machine to pour myself a cup of black coffee. “As for your Swiss accounts? Let’s talk about multi-signature keys.”

*“You can’t touch them!”* Celeste yelled hysterically. *“Swiss banking secrecy laws protect those funds with impenetrable legal armor!”*

“Swiss banking laws protect legitimate deposits, Celeste,” Arthur Sterling’s voice suddenly chimed in as my attorney stepped out from the private elevator carrying a secure laptop. “However, under international anti-money laundering treaty Article 14, funds proven to be derived from corporate embezzlement and human trafficking bribes are subject to immediate administrative seizure upon a magistrate’s order.”

Arthur tapped a key on his laptop, sending a high-speed data transmission directly through the encrypted satellite relay.

On the secure line, a computerized automated voice interrupted: *“Notice: Account ending in 8842—Vale Holdings International—has been frozen by order of the Swiss Federal Banking Commission.”*

“NO!” Celeste screamed, the sound of glass shattering echoing through the speaker as she presumably hurled her phone against a wall. “THAT’S MY MONEY! THAT’S ALL WE HAVE LEFT!”

“Consider it a donation to the Halcyon Employee Pension Fund,” I smiled, taking a slow sip of my coffee. “Sleep tight, Celeste. The federal marshals will be paying you a visit at dawn to discuss your new accommodations.”

I tapped the end-call button, cutting off her hysterical sobbing permanently.

Marcus looked down at the two unconscious assassins tied up on the rug. “What do we do with these professional tourists, boss?”

“Hand them over to the FBI’s domestic terrorism division,” Julian instructed firmly. “Let them sing about every corrupt politician and offshore fixer Celeste has ever paid off.”

“Right away, Mr. Ward,” Marcus nodded, hauling the first mercenary up by his tactical vest with effortless strength.

As Marcus dragged them toward the service elevator, I walked back to the massive glass window, watching the first pale streaks of dawn begin to bleed across the eastern sky over Manhattan.

The penthouse was quiet once more. The threat had been neutralized; the financial lifeline had been severed; the empire built on lies was completely dismantled.

Yet, as I stared at my reflection in the glass—where the faint shadow of yesterday’s bruise still lingered beneath my collarbone—I knew the game wasn't entirely over.

Adrian was still sitting in a federal holding cell, waiting for arraignment. And men like Adrian, backed into a corner with nothing left to lose, were often the most dangerous of all.
