Chapter 20 - The Open Horizon

The wedding ceremony a year later was nothing like the suffocating, televised spectacle St. Jude Cathedral had hosted years before.
There were no two hundred forced society guests whispering behind manicured hands. There was no mother-in-law lurking in the front pew with malicious intent. There were no hidden transfer papers slipped beneath marriage certificates.
It was held in a private glass pavilion overlooking the tranquil waters of upstate New York, surrounded only by my father, Arthur Sterling, our closest friends, and the courageous women whose lives had been touched by the Halcyon Freedom Foundation.
I wore a flowing, elegant ivory dress of my own design—simple, breathtaking, and entirely free of heavy constraints.
When Marcus slid the platinum band onto my finger, it didn't feel like a shackle. It felt like a key to an infinite horizon.
As we shared our first dance under a sky filled with twinkling summer stars, I looked out across the smiling faces of the people who loved me for who I truly was.
My past had tried to break me. My ex-husband had tried to own me. An empire built on greed and deception had tried to crush me under its weight.
Instead, I had taken the shattered pieces of my life, rewritten the rules of the game, and built a sanctuary of truth, strength, and unyielding independence.
The music drifted softly into the night air, carrying across the quiet lake.
Marcus pulled me closer, resting his chin gently against my hair.
“Where to next, Mrs. Vance?” he murmured with a quiet smile.
I looked up at the endless expanse of stars overhead, smiling into the warm night breeze, knowing that the story didn't end here—because true empowerment meant the horizon was always waiting to be explored.
“Wherever we want to go, Marcus,” I whispered softly. “Wherever we want to go.”

And with that, hand in hand, we stepped forward into the bright, unwritten future.
