Chapter 9 - The Federal Arraignment

The federal district courthouse in downtown Manhattan was surrounded by a sea of media vans, satellite dishes, and screaming reporters.

Camera flashes strobed like lightning against the imposing granite steps as high-profile defense attorneys, federal prosecutors, and corporate executives pushed through the surging crowds.

Inside courtroom 402, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Judge Howard Sterling—a notoriously strict federal magistrate known for showing zero tolerance toward white-collar criminals—sat behind the high mahogany bench, his expression etched in stone.

At the defense table sat Adrian Vale and Greg Vance, both dressed in orange federal detention jumpsuits, their wrists shackled to heavy iron loops bolted into the floor.

Adrian looked a shadow of his former self. Gone was the arrogant, perfectly tailored groom of two days ago. His hair was unwashed, dark circles shadowed his bloodshot eyes, and his shoulders slumped heavily under the weight of inevitable doom.

“Case number 2026-CR-8894,” the court clerk announced loudly. “United States versus Adrian Vale and Gregory Vance.”

“The court notes the presence of the defendants and their newly appointed public defenders,” Judge Sterling stated, scanning the legal briefs before him. “The charges include conspiracy to commit wire fraud, interstate extortion, falsification of corporate records, and misappropriation of employee pension funds totaling over fourteen million dollars.”

Adrian’s public defender, a tired-looking man named Henderson, stood up nervously. “Your Honor, my clients plead not guilty to all counts. We request a release on bail pending trial, citing—”

“Denied,” Judge Sterling interrupted flatly before Henderson could even finish his sentence.

A collective gasp rippled through the courtroom gallery.

“Denied, Your Honor?” Henderson stammered, adjusting his glasses. “On what grounds? Mr. Vale has deep ties to the community and—”

“Mr. Vale’s ties to offshore shell companies, combined with intercepted satellite communications indicating active conspiracy to flee prosecution and eliminate witnesses, classify him as an extreme flight risk and a danger to society,” the judge declared, slamming his gavel down with a sharp crack.

Adrian jerked forward, rattling his chains violently. “Your Honor! This is a miscarriage of justice! My wife—my estranged wife—orchestrated this entire coup out of spite! She’s manipulating the courts using her father’s influence! Look at her! She’s sitting right there!”

Adrian pointed a shaking, shackled finger directly toward the gallery.

All eyes turned. I sat in the front row, flanked by Julian Ward and Arthur Sterling. I wore a classic black trench coat, sunglasses resting on my lap, my expression completely serene and indifferent.

“Order in the court!” Judge Sterling warned, glaring down at Adrian. “Mr. Vale, you will address the bench with respect, or you will be removed to a holding cell for the remainder of this proceeding.”

“She stole my company!” Adrian cried out, his voice cracking with hysterical desperation as guards grabbed his shoulders to force him back into his seat. “She’s an orphan nobody! She’s a fraud!”

“Mr. Vale,” the federal prosecutor stepped forward smoothly, holding up a thick stack of certified documents. “For the record, the prosecution submits Exhibit F: verified shareholder registries proving beyond any doubt that Elena Ward holds fifty-one percent voting equity in Halcyon Hotels, legally acquired through direct family inheritance and personal labor over three years.”

The prosecutor turned toward the judge, offering a cold, triumphant smile.

“Furthermore, Your Honor, we have uncovered new evidence regarding the assault that occurred at St. Jude Cathedral two days ago.”

Adrian froze. Color drained entirely from his face.

“Unprovoked physical battery captured on multiple guest cameras,” the prosecutor continued, placing glossy high-resolution photographs of my bruised cheek onto the evidence desk. “Domestic violence charges have now been formally added to the federal indictment.”

“No...” Adrian whispered, slumping back into his metal chair, burying his face in his shackled hands as reality finally crashed down upon him.

“Defendants are remanded to federal custody without bail until the commencement of trial on November 12th,” Judge Sterling announced, striking his gavel one final time.

Bang!

“Court is adjourned.”

As the guards hauled Adrian and Greg away toward the heavy steel holding doors, Adrian looked back one last time.

His eyes met mine across the courtroom.

There was no anger left in his gaze—only a hollow, shattered emptiness.

I didn't blink. I didn't smile. I simply watched as the heavy iron doors closed, shutting him away from the world he had tried to conquer through deceit and violence.

The wedding day nightmare was officially over. But as I walked out of the courthouse into the bright autumn sunlight, I knew that rebuilding what had been broken would take time, patience, and unyielding strength.
