Chapter 11 - The Threat from the Shadows

Three days after Julian’s arrest, the corporate battlefield shifted into the shadows. While Julian remained held without bail in a federal detention center, the financial vultures of Apex Global Holdings went on the offensive.
Apex Global, led by a ruthless multi-billionaire private equity titan named Victor Vance (no relation to Dr. Arthur Vance), began executing an aggressive, covert hostile takeover. They started buying up Horizon’s publicly traded Class-B shares through hundreds of proxy corporations across Zurich, Hong Kong, and London, driving Horizon’s stock into wild volatility.
Meanwhile, inside Terminal Three, Ethan Carter’s life had transformed into a whirlwind of responsibility. Despite his new executive title, Ethan refused to sit in a plush corner office on the eighth floor. Every morning at 6:00 AM, he put on his navy blazer, strapped his badge to his lapel, and walked the concourses alongside the frontline workers.
Under Ethan’s direct guidance, the "Evelyn Brooks Compassion Protocol" was launched.
Ethan established twenty-four-hour "Compassion Stations" at every concourse, stocked with emergency baby formula, diapers, hygiene kits, warm blankets, and meal vouchers for stranded travelers. He doubled the frontline wheelchair assistance staff, raised hourly wages for baggage handlers, and implemented mandatory thirty-minute rest breaks during extreme weather operations.
Customer satisfaction ratings in Terminal Three skyrocketed by forty percent in seventy-two hours. Video clips of travelers sharing how Horizon employees helped them in moments of crisis flooded TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram under the trending hashtag #TheBoyAtTerminalThree.
On Tuesday afternoon, Ethan was sitting inside St. Jude's Specialty Oncology Pavilion, doing his calculus homework while Lily rested peacefully after her second round of immunotherapy. Her cheeks had regained a healthy pink glow, and her doctors reported that her leukemic blast cells had already dropped by fifty percent.
Martha walked into the room, carrying a fresh vase of sunflowers.
"Ethan," Martha said, her brow furrowing slightly. "There’s a man in an expensive gray suit waiting in the hallway. He said he represents Apex Global and insists on speaking with you privately."
Ethan closed his textbook, his senses instantly on high alert. "Stay with Lily, Mom. I’ll handle it."
Ethan stepped out into the quiet hospital corridor. Standing near the panoramic window was a tall, sharply dressed man with slick platinum hair and cold, reptilian eyes. He was holding a sleek leather briefcase.
"Mr. Ethan Carter," the man said, offering a stiff, unsmiling nod. "My name is Gregory Croft. Senior Managing Director at Apex Global Holdings."
"What are you doing at my sister's hospital, Mr. Croft?" Ethan asked coldly, keeping his distance.
Croft smiled, an empty, chilling gesture. "A hospital is a public place, Mr. Carter. We simply wanted to ensure that our future business partner’s family was receiving adequate care."
"I am not your business partner," Ethan replied firmly.
Croft set his briefcase on a nearby bench and popped the brass latches open. Inside lay five thick stacks of bearer bonds and a signed corporate transfer contract.
"Inside this case is ten million dollars in tax-free guaranteed bearer bonds," Croft whispered, leaning closer. "Along with a deed to a five-acre estate in Malibu, California. All of it belongs to you, Ethan. Today. Right now."
Ethan looked at the fortune without a flicker of temptation in his eyes. "And what does Apex want in return?"
"Very simple," Croft whispered. "Harold Brooks trusts you completely. Tomorrow morning, Harold will present the annual Compassion Trust Endowment to the Board. We need you to introduce a minor amendment to paragraph seven—an amendment that allows Apex proxy directors to assume voting control over Horizon’s regional airport leases."
Croft tapped the briefcase. "Ten million dollars, Ethan. You and your family will be set for ten generations. Your sister can have private doctors for the rest of her life. All you have to do... is look the other way."
Ethan looked at Croft with utter disgust.
"You really don't get it, do you?" Ethan said, his voice ringing with pure steel. "You think everyone has a price. You think my sister's health and Mr. Brooks's trust can be bought with dirty paper."
Ethan reached out and slammed the briefcase shut with a loud snap.
"Take your blood money and get out of this hospital before I have hospital security and the FBI throw you into the cell right next to Julian Brooks."

Croft’s polite smile vanished, replaced by a cold, menacing sneer.
"You're making a fatal mistake, boy," Croft hissed, picking up his briefcase. "In the real world, kindness is a weakness. And weakness gets crushed."
