Chapter 17 - The Secret of the Silver Key

On a quiet Sunday afternoon, three months after Ethan’s appointment as Special Executive Apprentice, Harold invited Ethan to his private residence—a modest, beautiful stone cottage overlooking Lake Michigan, far away from the glittering skyscrapers of Chicago.
The cottage was filled with thousands of books, vintage aviation models, and black-and-white photographs of Evelyn Brooks smiling beside classic propeller airplanes from the 1970s.
Harold sat by the crackling stone fireplace, pouring two cups of hot apple cider.
"Ethan," Harold began, his voice soft and reflective. "You have achieved more in four months than most corporate executives achieve in a lifetime. Lily’s leukemia is in full clinical remission, your mother is running our community foundation, and Horizon has never been stronger."
"It's all because of you, Mr. Brooks," Ethan replied humbly. "You gave me the chance."
"No, Ethan," Harold said with a gentle shake of his head. "I merely opened a door. You had the courage and purity of heart to walk through it."
Harold reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, ornate antique silver key attached to a worn leather cord. He placed it into Ethan’s palm.
"What is this, Mr. Brooks?" Ethan asked, studying the intricate engravings on the old key.
"Fifty-two years ago, when Evelyn and I built our very first hangar at Willow Creek Airfield in Ohio, we buried a steel time capsule beneath the concrete foundation of Hangar One," Harold explained, his eyes misty with memory. "Inside that vault is the original founding covenant, Evelyn’s private letters, and the ultimate deed of succession for this company."
Harold leaned closer, looking into Ethan’s eyes with deep solemnity.
"I am eighty years old, Ethan. My doctors tell me my heart is growing tired. I do not have many years left on this Earth."
"Mr. Brooks, please don't say that—" Ethan protested, his chest aching at the thought of losing the man who had become like a grandfather to him.
"We must face reality with courage, my boy," Harold smiled warmly. "I have no living heirs who care for this mission. Julian chose the path of greed, and he must face his justice. But you... you carry Evelyn’s spirit in your blood."
Harold closed Ethan’s fingers around the silver key.
"When the time comes, Ethan, this key will unlock Hangar One. It contains my final gift to you and to the people of this country. Promise me that no matter what happens, you will never allow Horizon to forget that people matter more than profits."
"I swear to you, Mr. Brooks," Ethan said, tears shining in his eyes. "On my life and my family's honor, I will never forget."
Suddenly, the peaceful silence of the cottage was shattered by the shrill ringing of Harold’s secure satellite phone.
