Chapter 13 - The Mysterious Whistleblower

Following the triumphant handling of the Great Blizzard, Horizon International stood at the pinnacle of public admiration. Yet beneath the glowing headlines, a dangerous undercurrent was gathering force.
On Wednesday morning, Ethan arrived at his desk in the Executive Operations Wing to find an unmarked, encrypted USB drive sitting inside an envelope addressed to him in elegant, handwritten cursive: *From a friend who remembers Evelyn.*
Ethan immediately took the drive to Harold's private office, where Claire Morgan and Chief Security Officer Donald Vance connected the device to an isolated, air-gapped forensic computer.
The screen flickered to life, revealing hundreds of classified internal communications, wiretap transcripts, and encrypted bank records dating back over three years.
The documents revealed a terrifying truth:
Julian Brooks and Apex Global were not the only conspirators trying to destroy Horizon from within.
There was a high-ranking traitor sitting on Horizon’s very own Board of Directors.
For the past thirty-six months, this traitor—code-named *Architect*—had been leaking Horizon’s proprietary route expansion algorithms, sabotaging automated baggage handling contracts, and funneling insider information to Apex Global to artificially depress Horizon's stock value before the planned hostile takeover.
"My God," Claire whispered, her hand trembling as she scrolled through the damning logs. "The leak wasn't coming from operations. It was coming from the boardroom."
"Do we have an identity?" Harold asked, his voice steady despite the deep pain in his eyes.
"The digital signature is masked behind a triple-layer Swiss proxy," Donald Vance replied, analyzing the code. "However, the whistleblower left an encrypted audio file labeled: *Listen before the Annual Shareholders Gala.*"
Ethan clicked the audio file.
A distorted, electronically altered voice filled the quiet office:
*"Harold... if you are listening to this, you survived Julian’s first strike. But the serpent is still in your house. The Architect has purchased twelve percent of Horizon’s secondary debt notes through dummy corporations in Luxembourg. At the Annual Gala on Saturday, they plan to trigger an artificial debt-default clause, force Horizon into emergency Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and seize total control of all international terminals. Look at the balance sheet for the London Heathrow expansion project. Follow the money to the Cayman accounts. Be careful, Harold... they are willing to kill to keep this secret."*
The recording clicked off.
A heavy silence descended over the room.
"The London expansion..." Harold muttered, his brow furrowing. "That project was personally overseen by only two board members: James Reynolds and Victoria Sterling."
Ethan looked up sharply. James Reynolds was Harold’s oldest living friend—the man who had stood by Harold’s side fifty-two years ago when Horizon was founded. Victoria Sterling was the brilliant, icy corporate financier whose husband was Richard Sterling, Julian’s defense attorney.
"Could it be James?" Claire whispered, her voice laced with dread. "James has been struggling with massive real estate debts in Florida."
"No," Ethan said instinctively, shaking his head. "I watched Mr. Reynolds’s face when Wallace was fired and when Julian was arrested. His anger was real. A traitor doesn't look at Mr. Brooks with that kind of grief."
Harold looked at Ethan, a faint smile touching his lined lips. "You have great instincts, Ethan. You judge people by their hearts, not just their spreadsheets."
"We need undeniable proof before Saturday’s Gala," Ethan insisted. "If we accuse the wrong board member, the panic will crash our stock, and Apex will buy the remaining shares on Monday morning."
"How do we get the proof?" Claire asked.
Ethan’s eyes flashed with a brilliant, daring idea.
"We set a trap," Ethan said. "We leak a fake audit report showing that Horizon has discovered the hidden debt notes and is liquidating them tomorrow night. The real traitor will be forced to access the secure server room in the basement to destroy the evidence before the Gala."

Harold smiled, tapping his mahogany cane against the floor with absolute delight.
"The boy is a master strategist," Harold chuckled. "Let’s build the cage and catch the snake."
