The Boy at Terminal Three / Chapter 3 / 30

Chapter 3 - The Call to the Top

Ethan looked down in absolute astonishment.

The old man was no longer slouching in the wheelchair. Harold sat perfectly upright, his spine straight as an oak, his trembling completely gone. His pale blue eyes, which had looked so frail and exhausted moments before, now gleamed with an aura of immense, unmistakable command.

"Excuse me, old man," Wallace barked arrogantly, stepping forward with his hand resting on his hip. "This is an internal airport personnel matter. Mind your own business before I have my officers trespass you from the facility."

Harold didn't even look at Wallace. He kept his steady, reassuring gaze fixed on Ethan’s pale face.

"You did the right thing, Ethan," Harold said, his voice deep, resonant, and calm. "Never apologize for showing mercy. And never let a petty tyrant strip you of your dignity."

Harold reached inside the inner pocket of his faded canvas jacket. From beneath the worn fabric, he did not pull out an old bus pass or a tattered wallet. He withdrew a sleek, matte-black custom encrypted smartphone, crafted from aerospace-grade titanium, bearing no commercial brand logo.

Wallace frowned, a sudden flicker of uncertainty crossing his brow. "What is that?"

Harold tapped the biometric scanner on the back of the phone. The screen flashed a high-security amber interface. He brought the device to his ear. The terminal crowd watched in dead silence as the call connected on the very first ring.

"Activate Priority Alpha protocol," Harold said into the phone, his voice cutting through the terminal with chilling authority. "I am standing at Gate 14, Concourse B, Terminal Three. Bring Claire Morgan to the floor immediately. And tell the Board of Directors that the search is over. I found the boy."

Wallace let out a loud, mocking bark of laughter, though his laughter sounded noticeably thinner than before.

"Claire Morgan?" Wallace scoffed, shaking his head at the crowd as if inviting them to share the joke. "Did you hear this lunatic? He thinks he can summon the Chief Executive Officer of Horizon International! Claire Morgan manages forty-two international airports across North America! She’s currently in the private VIP SkySuite hosting federal aviation delegates. She wouldn't spit in your direction, old man."

Harold calmly lowered the phone, slipping it back into his jacket pocket. He folded his hands over the wool blanket Ethan had given him.

"You have approximately four minutes to reconsider your career choices, Mr. Wallace," Harold said quietly.

"That does it!" Wallace raged, turning to the two armed security guards. "Officers! Restrain this vagrant and remove this fired former employee from the terminal immediately!"

The two guards took a step forward, their hands moving toward their utility belts. But before they could reach Ethan or the wheelchair, the massive glass automatic doors at the VIP entrance slid open with a loud pneumatic hiss.

Outside on the rain-drenched terminal curb, four jet-black Cadillac Escalades with flashing red and blue federal clearance lights screeched to a halt in a perfect tactical formation.

The crowd of passengers gasped in unison. People pressed against the glass, pointing in utter disbelief.

Within five seconds, the VIP doors flew wide. Six corporate executive security officers in matching charcoal suits, wearing discrete earpieces, entered the terminal at a brisk trot, establishing a clear security perimeter.

And walking directly behind them was a woman whose face was plastered across every aviation magazine, business journal, and corporate billboard in the United States.

Claire Morgan.

At fifty-two years old, Claire Morgan was considered one of the most powerful and ruthless corporate executives in the global transportation industry. Dressed in an impeccably tailored dark slate suit, her silver-streaked hair styled in an elegant chignon, she walked with an aura of absolute dominance that parted the crowd of five hundred travelers like the Red Sea.

Wallace’s clipboard slipped from his fingers. It hit the floor with a loud, hollow plastic clatter.

"Ms... Ms. Morgan?" Wallace stammered, all the color instantly draining from his face until he looked like a walking corpse. "Ma'am! I... I wasn't informed of an executive site inspection! We have everything under control here! Just an unruly passenger and a terminated employee—"

Claire Morgan didn't even acknowledge Wallace's existence. She walked straight past him as if he were a pane of glass.

To the absolute shock and horror of Wallace, the security guards, and every single traveler recording on their phones, the multi-millionaire CEO stopped directly in front of the battered steel wheelchair.

Without a single second of hesitation, Claire Morgan dropped to her knees right onto the damp, dirty floor, her expensive designer trousers soaking in the puddle.

She looked up at the old man, her eyes filled with profound relief, deep reverence, and genuine tears.

"Mr. Brooks," Claire whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "Thank God you're safe. We’ve had three regional task forces searching for you since yesterday morning."

Harold Brooks looked down at her with a gentle, wry smile.

"Hello, Claire," Harold said softly. "I told you I was taking a short flight."

"You turned off your satellite transponder," Claire scolded gently, wiping a tear from her cheek. "You gave your security detail a heart attack in Chicago."

"I wanted to see what my airports look like when no one knows the boss is coming," Harold replied.

The entire terminal seemed to hold its collective breath.

Wallace stood frozen, his mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish. He felt the room spinning violently around him.

"M-Mr. Brooks?" Wallace croaked, his voice pitching high into a squeak. "Harold... Harold Brooks?"

Claire Morgan stood up slowly, turning to face the trembling supervisor. When her eyes locked onto Wallace, the warmth vanished, replaced by an icy glare that could freeze fire.

"Yes, Mr. Wallace," Claire said, her voice echoing across the silent concourse like a judge handing down a death sentence. "Allow me to introduce Harold Brooks. The sole founder, majority shareholder, and supreme Chairman of Horizon International."

Claire gestured toward the vast, glittering terminal around them.

"The man who built this entire empire from a single runway fifty-two years ago... and the man who owns every single brick, airplane, and paycheck in this building."
