Chapter 20 - The Battle on the Catwalk

Ethan moved through the subterranean steam tunnels like a shadow. His heart beat with thunderous intensity, but his mind was crystal clear. He knew every pipe, every ventilation shaft, and every catwalk in Sub-Level 2.
Up ahead, through the mist of the industrial pipes, he spotted the blinking red LEDs of four C4 explosive bricks strapped to the massive steel foundation pillar supporting the central glass atrium of Terminal Three.
Julian Brooks stood on the overhead metal catwalk, holding a remote digital detonator in his gloved hand. The four mercenaries were moving toward the exit tunnel.
"Julian!" Ethan’s voice rang through the cavernous chamber like a gunshot.
Julian spun around on the catwalk, his weapon drawn. When he saw Ethan standing beneath him, a psychotic, triumphant grin spread across his scarred face.
"The baggage boy returned for the grand finale!" Julian laughed maniacally. "How poetic! You came to die in the basement where you belong!"
"It’s over, Julian!" Ethan shouted, stepping steadily toward the foundation pillar. "The terminal above is being evacuated. The FBI has surrounded the entire airport perimeter. You have nowhere to run!"
"I don't need to run, Carter!" Julian screamed, holding up the detonator. "I’m taking everything down with me! When this detonator hits zero, fifteen thousand tons of steel and glass will crush this terminal into a graveyard!"
The digital countdown timer on the bomb display read: *01:45... 01:44... 01:43...*
Julian raised his assault rifle, aiming directly for Ethan’s chest.
Ethan didn't hesitate. He grabbed a high-pressure steam release valve beside him and yanked the lever with all his strength.
A massive, deafening blast of superheated white steam erupted directly into the catwalk, blinding Julian and knocking his aim off. The rifle bullets ricocheted wildly off the concrete ceiling.
Ethan leaped onto the metal staircase, charging up the catwalk with incredible speed.
Julian coughed wildly in the thick steam, swinging his rifle like a club. Ethan tackled him hard, slamming the older man against the iron railing. The rifle flew from Julian's hands, clattering down into the thirty-foot pit below.
The two struggled furiously on the narrow catwalk. Julian, fueled by insane adrenaline, threw a brutal punch that caught Ethan across the jaw, splitting his lip. Ethan stumbled backward, his head spinning, but he caught himself on the railing.
Julian drew a combat knife from his tactical vest, lunging forward with a deadly slash.
"Die, you little peasant!" Julian roared.
Ethan dodged the blade, grabbed Julian’s wrist with both hands, and used his momentum to execute a perfect leverage throw—a technique he had used thousands of times to heave heavy cargo. Julian was hurled violently against the steel control box, dropping the knife.
The timer flashed: *00:30... 00:29... 00:28...*
Ethan dove for the foundation pillar, his hands moving with lightning speed. During his executive safety training, he had studied bomb defusal protocols for airport infrastructure. He located the primary transceiver wire—the green ground loop connecting the four C4 blocks.
Julian scrambled to his feet, lunging toward the remote detonator on the catwalk floor.
"NO!" Julian shrieked.
Ethan clamped his teeth, grabbed the thick copper ground wire with his bare hands, and ripped it from the circuit board with a savage, desperate pull.
*00:03... 00:02... 00:01...*
*SYSTEM OFFLINE. DETONATION ABORTED.*
The red blinking lights on all four bombs died instantly, replaced by steady green safeties.
At that exact moment, the heavy steel blast doors of Sub-Level 2 burst open. A squad of twelve elite FBI SWAT operators and Donald Vance flooded the catwalk with high-powered laser sights.
"DROP TO THE GROUND! HANDS BEHIND YOUR HEAD!" the SWAT commander roared.
Julian Brooks collapsed to his knees, staring in utter disbelief at the dead bomb timers. He began sobbing uncontrollably, his mind completely broken by his ultimate defeat.
Ethan stood breathing heavily, wiping blood from his cut lip.
Donald Vance ran onto the catwalk, throwing his arm around Ethan’s shoulder. "The terminal is safe, Ethan! You did it! You saved thousands of lives!"

Ethan looked up through the ventilation grates toward the glittering lights of Terminal Three.
"We did it together," Ethan whispered.
