Chapter 9 - The Ambush in the Dark

The subterranean tunnel beneath Concourse C was deafening. The continuous metallic roar of the baggage conveyor belts echoed off the concrete walls, drowning out any chance of calling for help.
Ethan had less than a second to react. The masked attacker swung the heavy steel pipe with brutal force, aiming directly for Ethan’s head.
Ethan ducked instinctively, feeling the wind of the pipe graze his hair as the steel weapon clanged violently against the iron handrail, sending bright yellow sparks flying into the dark.
Ethan didn't freeze. Growing up in a rough neighborhood and working physically demanding shifts handling fifty-pound luggage had made him agile and tough. He drove his shoulder hard into the attacker's midsection, tackling the man against the concrete support pillar.
The attacker grunted in pain, dropping the steel pipe onto the metal catwalk. But the man was heavier and stronger than Ethan. He grabbed Ethan by the collar of his blazer, slamming him hard against the security fence, his fingers locking onto Ethan’s throat.
"You should have stayed a baggage boy, Carter," the man hissed through the black ski mask. "You’re sticking your nose into business that’s going to get you killed!"
Ethan struggled to breathe, his vision blurring as the man's grip tightened. But Ethan’s hand swept across his utility belt, grabbing his heavy-duty airport inspection flashlight. With a surge of adrenaline, Ethan brought the solid aluminum flashlight up, striking the attacker’s wrist with all his strength.
The man howled in pain, his grip breaking.
Ethan seized the opportunity. He swept the man’s legs out from under him with a low kick. The attacker crashed hard onto the grated catwalk. Before the man could recover, Ethan reached down and ripped the black ski mask from his face.
Ethan gasped in shock.
"Henderson?" Ethan breathed.
The man was Mark Henderson, the senior logistics manager for Concourse C—and Julian Brooks’s personal right-hand man in airport operations.
Henderson scrambled backward, his face twisted in panic and malice. "You don't know what you're dealing with, Carter! This airport is going down, and Julian is taking over whether you like it or not!"
Henderson reached into his pocket, pulled out a small electronic detonator remote, and smashed it against the catwalk floor, intentionally triggering a short-circuit surge in the bypass module attached to the fuel control box.
Instantly, bright red warning strobes began flashing throughout the underground tunnel, accompanied by an ear-splitting klaxon alarm:
*WARNING: FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE CRITICAL. JET-A CONDUIT LEAK DETECTED AT GATE 18.*
Henderson scrambled to his feet and sprinted down the emergency escape tunnel, disappearing into the darkness before Ethan could grab him.
Ethan didn't chase him. He looked at the fuel control panel. High-pressure aviation fuel was currently pumping toward Gate 18 on the tarmac above, where a Boeing 777 passenger aircraft loaded with three hundred passengers was currently preparing for departure to London. The compromised valve was overloading the pressure lines, threatening a massive fuel explosion beneath the aircraft's wing.
Ethan sprinted to the control junction box. The bypass module had jammed the digital emergency stop button. Thick sparks were spitting from the wiring harness, and the scent of highly volatile jet fuel began drifting through the ventilation shafts.
Ethan grabbed his two-way executive radio, switching directly to the Priority Emergency Channel.
"Operations Command! This is Ethan Carter in Sub-Level 3 beneath Concourse C! We have a sabotage event on Fuel Line 7! The automated shutoff is overridden! Cut the master tarmac fuel pumps immediately!"
Up in the executive command center, Claire Morgan’s voice crackled through the radio. *"Ethan! The master computer is locked by an unauthorized administrative firewall! We can't shut it down from here! The manual cutoff valve is located inside the pressure vault right next to you!"*
*"How do I close it?"* Ethan yelled, coughing as fuel fumes grew thicker.
*"You have to turn the manual iron wheel clockwise, but the pressure lock requires over two hundred foot-pounds of torque!"* Claire responded frantically. *"Paramedics and fire crews are six minutes out!"*
*"Six minutes is too late!"* Ethan shouted.
Ethan threw his tablet aside and ran into the narrow pressure vault. In the center of the vibrating pipe stood a giant, red cast-iron wheel. High-pressure steam and fuel vapor hissed from the surrounding gaskets.
Ethan grabbed the iron wheel with both hands. It was scalding hot. The heat burned through his palms, but Ethan refused to let go. He planted his worn sneakers against the concrete floor, clenched his teeth until they ached, and pulled with every ounce of muscle, willpower, and heart in his body.
He thought of Lily smiling in her hospital bed. He thought of Harold Brooks's faith in him. He thought of the three hundred innocent passengers sitting on that plane above his head.
"COME ON!" Ethan roared at the top of his lungs.
With a loud, agonizing metallic screech, the rusty iron wheel broke free and began to turn. Ethan spun the wheel frantically: one turn, two turns, three turns, until a massive iron clunk echoed through the pipes.
The roaring fuel pressure suddenly dropped to zero. The hissing steam stopped. The red warning sirens switched to a steady amber standby light.
*SYSTEM SHUTDOWN COMPLETE. PRESSURE NORMALIZED.*
Ethan collapsed onto the metal grating, his hands blistered, his chest heaving, covered in sweat and grease.
Seconds later, heavy footsteps pounded down the stairs as airport tactical police, fire crews, and Harold Brooks himself rushed into the tunnel.
Harold dropped his cane, knelt beside the exhausted teenager, and pulled him into a fierce embrace.
"You saved hundreds of lives today, son," Harold said, his voice trembling with profound emotion. "You are truly our guardian angel."

Ethan looked up, breathing heavily. "Mr. Brooks... it was Mark Henderson. Julian's man. Julian is trying to destroy the airport to force the Apex buyout."
Harold's eyes turned to cold steel. "Then the war begins today."
