Chapter 10 - The Hidden Will Amendment

Two days after the arrests, while local news outlets were already running morning segments on the shocking suburban scandal involving attempted mortgage fraud and a disastrous Easter eviction, I sat in the grand conference room of Pierce & Associates downtown.

Across the mahogany table sat my longtime friend and former law partner, Judge Ellen Pierce, who had temporarily stepped down from the bench to act as my personal legal counsel.

“Well, Margaret, the arraignment went exactly as we planned,” Ellen said, sliding a thick legal folder across the table toward me. “Daniel refused to cooperate with the public defender, and Vanessa is currently trying to pin the entire mortgage fraud scheme on him to save her own skin in the Cayman offshore investigation.”

“Let them tear each other apart,” I said coldly, opening the folder. “What about the trust restructuring?”

Ellen smiled warmly, her eyes crinkling at the corners. “Already filed. But that brings us to the most interesting development of all. When we subpoenaed Daniel’s personal laptop and cloud storage through the federal warrant, our forensic team uncovered something neither of us anticipated.”

I looked up, raising an eyebrow. “What kind of something?”

Ellen slid a digitized, scanned document across the table. It was an old legal memorandum dated twelve years ago, bearing my late husband’s signature—alongside a notarized codicil that Daniel had tried to suppress and hide in an encrypted folder.

My breath caught in my throat as I read the title: *Conditional Inheritance Rider and Asset Protection Clause*.

“Good grief,” I whispered, scanning the legal text. “David drafted a supplementary rider before he passed away?”

“He knew what kind of man Daniel was turning into even back then,” Ellen explained softly. “David foresaw that Daniel might attempt to manipulate you or drain your assets through fraudulent marriages or failed business ventures. The rider explicitly states that any direct attempt by Daniel—or his legal spouses—to forge financial documents, commit fraud against your estate, or physically harass you results in the immediate, total forfeiture of any future inheritance, trust payouts, or residual beneficiary rights.”

I stared at the document, a profound sense of awe washing over me. My late husband had protected me from beyond the grave.

“So legally speaking,” I murmured, looking up at Ellen, “they don't just lose the house. They lose everything.”

“Down to the last penny,” Ellen confirmed. “Their names are legally expunged from your estate tree forever.”
