Chapter 20 - The Open Horizon and the Final Knock

We spent the afternoon laughing, sharing stories, and enjoying a magnificent meal in the sunlit dining room, far away from the shadows of the past. The dark days of courtrooms, federal warrants, and ungrateful parasites felt like a lifetime ago.

As the sun began to dip below the western horizon, casting a breathtaking golden-orange glow across the heated pool and the manicured lawns, Ellen and Sarah departed, leaving me to enjoy the quiet evening breeze on the back patio.

I sat in my favorite wicker armchair, sipping a final cup of chamomile tea, watching the rippling water reflect the twilight stars.

Suddenly, the front gate chime rang softly once more.

I paused, raising an eyebrow. It was past 8:00 PM. Visitors were rare at this hour.

I walked through the quiet house to the foyer monitor and looked at the camera screen.

Standing outside the wrought-iron gate was a tall, unfamiliar young man holding a manila envelope. He looked respectable, wearing a simple wool coat, his face obscured slightly by the shadows of the evening streetlamp.

I pressed the intercom button. “Can I help you?”

The young man looked directly up into the camera lens. His voice was soft, hesitant, but remarkably clear.

“Hello, Margaret,” he said quietly. “My name is David Jr. I’m your late husband’s son... from before he met you. And I think it’s time we finally had a conversation about what really happened to the family trust.”

I froze, my hand resting on the metal intercom box as the evening wind rustled softly through the oak trees, leaving an open horizon of mystery stretching out into the dark night.
